I have a fear of cockroaches, how can I overcome this fear and does anyone know what this fear is called?

Asked by megan5555 (179points) November 24th, 2010

Well, I was home by myself and there was a cockroache in my room and I did not go in my room for the whole night until my dad came home the next morning, killed it and then flushed it down the toilet.

I know how you feel…me and Strong Lamb , therefore I recommend you watch this video from about 11 minutes (might have to wait a minute after you set the dial at 11 minutes-or better yet watch the whole cartoon about the lamb killing cockroaches). You won’t understand unless you speak Chinese, but you’ll enjoy seeing a chinese speaking lamb go bat shit over killing those bastards.
I should add: the best way to get over the fear is buy a fly swatter and beat the shit out of them when you see them.

Note: I don’t recommend doing this to other helpful insects, just those bastards.

Get one of these – electric airsoft pistol .
It costs about $20–25 and shoots 6mm plastic BBs. They won’t damage the walls or furniture but are strong enough to cut a large roach in half. We lived overseas in an area famous for large roaches and my kids were afraid of them, too. After they had these guns they’d look forward to seeing a roach on the ceiling. The guns hold between 150 and 200 shots and are powered by AA batteries. On full auto (about 5 shots per second) you just pull the trigger and walk the rounds into the target. Empowerment!
It does leave a mess, so have some tissues handy.

I suggest you move when you reach adulthood. Much of the world is cockroach-free.

P.S. Don’t you hate it when they fly?

@marinelife lol! that was cruel.
@megan5555 have your parents exterminated for this problem. If and when they do, try putting boric acid down around and under cabinets and crevices. It works. When I was young (years and years ago), we had a roach problem that my dad realized terrified me. After fumigating the house, he put down boric acid and I never saw a roach again. When I grew up, wherever I moved, I would always put boric acid in cracks, crevices, around the sink, behind the stove, and in closets. Problem solved.

OMG, I lived in Thailand for a year and a roach fell on my head. I FREAKED! I am so scared of them.

LuckyGuy's avatar

@Jakki I know! They are so huge we could sometimes track their droppings! That’s why you can get ‘em with the Airsoft guns. My family kidded that there should be a hunting season!

My daughter kept those huge Madagascar hissing cockroaches for years.

I got over my fears and think they are actually cool.

At the time we had a home with knotty pine floors and for the first year or so I would think that the dark knotholes in the wood was one her escaped roaches.

It would make me jump every time! lol

OMG!!
Those electric airsoft pistols are so fun to play with, my dad bought me one and its like being a really little kid again.
My dad also got someone to get rid of those bastards (cockroaches) and I havent seen one yet.
THANK YOU everyone for your help:)
