Are loud auto/truck mufflers cramping your style?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) November 25th, 2010

It’s no wonder I have to wear hearing aids. Since the 1950’s, factory installed auto mufflers have gotten louder. Not to mention loud motorcycles with the baffles taken out. And, not to mention auto mufflers that are not stock from the factory. One driver asked me one day on a traffic stop, ” what gives you the right to determine what’s too loud on my automobile”? After issuing him a citation, I explained that i could hear him coming towards me, at least a mile a way. He had no mufflers, just straight exhaust pipes. He paid his fine. Question: Where you live, do the police actively enforce the loud muffler laws or is it just overlooked?

I’m not sure about here, but when I was in Delaware, there was one area that the police actively enforced. It was an area where cars would ‘cruise’ around each weekend. They put up signs about the noise ordinance and people with loud music and loud exhausts got citations.

Totally overlooked. It really hacks me off that a lot of cops in this area are also bike riders, and like their bikes LOUD. So they give other asshole riders a pass on that, too.

I’ve got nothing against bikers, but I don’t like the ones who like to make loud noise in residential areas ‘just because’.
