Do you think people shop on Black Friday for themselves, or to give to others?

Asked by cockswain (15276points) November 26th, 2010

I see people in their early 20s buying nice TVs. I’m thinking they aren’t buying them for other people. What do you think about the majority of Black Friday shoppers? Getting themselves deals, or getting them for relatives?

I would assume both. If I did participate, it would be for me depending on what I needed. If I didn’t need anything, it would be for other people. I don’t have a tv or any game system, not even an MP3 player or laptop lol…....so it would be for me.

Both. There’s nothing wrong with taking advantage of the sale. Besides, most of the deals are on the pricer items, but most gifts aren’t – when was the last time you gave anyone besides your kid or spouse a flat-screen tv, an ebook reader, or a new computer? If the sale extended to things like sweaters, I think people would shop more for others, but not the way it’s set up.

On my front at least, it’s both. I have a ton of items going in and out of my cart on Amazon… it’s equally split between gifts for other people and treats for myself. There are some cracked-out deals going on and this is one of the few times of the year that I give myself permission to indulge in material goodies.

Plus, I’m getting paid in a week.

My wife and daughter are out there beating off the hordes with pitchforks, all in the service of finding presents for others.

Many of the big ticket items, such as the TV I wanted – the 40” LCD for $298 – show up on craigs list or Ebay the next day for $400. It’s a pretty easy $100 bucks.

My oldest grandson (age 23) spent the night in line in front of Best Buy and had a ball with his friends, but came home empty handed. It was the fun of being out all night that he wanted.

Me thinks them chaos junkies. There is no reasonable reason to engage in this practice. No one needs a tv THAT much.

Earlier today I heard on NPR that around 15% of the gifts bought were for the people buying them.

i think that if you get up to go shopping at 3, 4, 5 am – it doesn’t matter who the gift is for, you’re simply nuts

@christos99 Not if you come home and take a nap

@incendiary_dan That’s probably as accurate an answer as I could have hoped. Thanks.
