How to write an analysis essay? (English)

Asked by nailpolishfanatic (6637points) November 28th, 2010

Ok so am coming to you guys with an essay question again as last time. This is due on Wednesday and I want to finish it today.
So this is what the teacher sent me because I didn’t know what to do…

1.Write and analysis and interpretation of “Popular Mechanics” by Raymond Carver. Make sure to comment on:
-the main characters
-the setting
-the themes
-the style

2. Analyse the painting by Michael Kvium that you will find uploaded for Tuesday.
In the description focus on
a) the relationship between the characters (distance, contact, etc)
b) how the characters look
c) what is the story the painting is telling?

3) Conclusion

In a brief conclusion try to relate your analysis to the short story and consider to what extent the painting illustrates the themes of the story.

I just read the story again and I know what in the end the baby dies.
But I don’t know where to start. If you are one of those who helped me with my History essay when I asked a question about how to write it last Thursday, just to let you know for that essay I wrote Introduction, body and conclusion.
Am I supposed to do the same for this as well?

Yes. Pretty much all essays you write for school should fit the traditional 5-paragraph structure (Intro, 3 body, Conclusion) — except you can put way more than 3 body paragraphs in there. Occasionally, you might be able to do different structures, but unless a teacher specifically tells you otherwise, they’ll never turn down that format, and it will almost always be a creative writing class wanting something different.

So if it were me, I’d do:
Intro – Tell us about the story – It’s a dramatic tale about good vs evil and sibling rivalry. Set in NYC, we follow our protagonist, Mike, through life as his brother, Kyle, gets everything Mike wants.
Body – Mike and Kyle have a traditional love/hate relationship, which is mirrored in Mike’s relationship with nature as he loves camping but works for a oil company. The relationship becomes increasingly dark and violent, which is often symbolized by their meeting more frequently at night during storms later in the book.
Conclusion – I suck at this part

First read the short story and it is very short. This essay is also worth reading and will give you some ideas to think about. You will have to use your imagination. Does the baby die? possibly, but that is an interpretation of the story and it isn’t explicitly stated. I don’t know the painting by Michael Kvium but presumably it gives the artists interpretation of the story.

Your teacher has laid out pretty clearly what is expected of you. Just go through it step by step.

The conclusion will be the trickiest bit. A painting and a short story are such different mediums but they can express the same themes and the same emotions in different ways. Do you think this is true in this case? Why did the artist bother? Anyway good luck. I’m sure you will write a great essay.

@papayalily thank you and lol at the conclusion part ” I suck at this part” :) – you are not the only one^^

@flutherother thank you. – I will take some of those questions that you put in the conclusion part and I will I guess answer them :)

I am getting to it now, just explaining what the story is about and what time it happens…. a little introduction.

Since the teacher pretty much told you in each case what to analyze, your main job is to answer the questions posed and just organize it in a logical manner, i.e., introduction, body and conclusion.

As I remember it, the conclusion is a bit like the intro. In the intro, tell ‘em what you’re going to do in the essay. In the conclusion paraphrase the intro.

Everyone sucks at conclusions. If you can learn how to write a good one, you’ll be in a really good spot. I was always told to write about what you find interesting in the story, even if it reminds you of something else entirely. Find that one thing and go with it.
