When is the best time to buy airplane tickets for a trip in April?

Asked by Kingkamandi (149points) November 28th, 2010

My wife and I are planning a trip to Wash. DC from Los Angeles and are wondering if we will get cheaper tickets now (in November) or if we wait until after the holidays are over?

When would you like to travel? Reverse that. Aka, not before the holiday, but during or after. Not friday, but mid-week. And so forth. Most people will choose those dates, less seats – higher price. More seats, airlines want to fill up – lower price.

I think the earlier the better. Since your trip is so far out, you should get excellent prices. Alternatively, you could wait for a sale.

The sooner the better. Easter is april 24th, so if you are travelling the week before or the week after, then especially the sooner the better.

Early is not always best. I used to fly every two weeks, and at the time prices hit bottom three to six weeks before the flight.

They throw out a high price initially. People who buy early are more anxious about getting their plans locked down than about getting a good price.

I highly recommend Bing’s forecast, I used it before Microsoft bought it, it was called Farecast.

Sorry to sound like a commercial, I have no interest in the company, but they base their predictions on real data, not anecdotes.

And some airlines don’t show up in Orbitz & Yahoo travel, etc. Jet Blue and Southwest come to mind. Check their web sites.
