Have you ever listened to a song where the lyrics did not match the music?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) November 28th, 2010

I just listened to a song recorded in the 80s, where the lyrics did not match the music. The musicians, the singers and the arrangement of this song were super great, but there could have been much better lyrics and meaning. The song title is “Shake You Down” by Greory Abbott. It could have been a beautiful slow song to dance to, if only the lyrics were different. Question: do you know of a similar song, where the lyrics did not match the musical score of the song?

there’s this song that I stumbled upon… its called “Bear” by The Antlers. It’s a beautiful song, really, but, its haunting.

it seems all soothing and calm, and sort of like a lullaby, but… if you listen to the lyrics, its really dark.

I mean, look at them:
“There’s a bear inside your stomach
The cub’s been kicking you for weeks
And if this isn’t all a dream
Well then we’ll cut him from beneath
Well we’re not scared of making caves
Or finding food for him to eat
We’re terrified of one another
And terrified of what that means
But we’ll make only quick decisions
And you’ll just keep my in the waiting room
And all the while I’ll know we’re fucked
And not getting unfucked soon
When we get home we’re bigger strangers than we’ve ever been before
You sit in front of snowy television, suitcase on the floor”

I do, but they were done in a good way—the lyrics were angry/sad but the music was a weird sort of happy. I liked the oppositions, but it’s a little different in these few songs because the artists meant to do so. (A kind of funny one I’m partial to is Lily Allen’s ‘F*** You’ the censored version is actually better than the uncensored one [ : )

I know what you mean, and they bother me too, where the artist(s) were just off… but I can’t think of any specific example right now.

@troubleinharlem Hah, I find that most of the songs by The Antlers are like that.

Fiddle Player, i listened to that noise. sounds like they were all on acid. again, thats just noise, not music. my head still hurts from that noise.

Troble in Harlem, if there ever was a suicide song, this is it.

This leaves me with an eeery feeling.

It takes two to tango and the results should be shared by all parties involved. so be it.

Here’s a song with lyrics you might not expect.

Famously or not, Gilbert O’Sullivan’s Alone Again, Naturally has a really upbeat tune, when it’s about a guy who’s just been left at the altar and has an otherwise miserable life. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_P-v1BVQn8

In a little while from now
If I’m not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top will throw myself off

Yes. Adam Sandler’s At a Medium Pace but it’s definitely one of the funniest songs I have ever heard. If you’re not easily offended and you’ve never heard it, I highly recommend it.

@john65pennington : Suicidal? It actually makes me feel calm… if I don’t listen to the lyrics.
@Tink : Yeah… I’ve noticed that too.
@Foolaholic : o.O

@troubleinharlem My sentiments exactly. It’s a very catchy song with very unexpected lyrics. Thought it might be pertinent.
