Do you think the tribulation will be shorter than seven years?

Asked by KeithWilson (833points) November 29th, 2010

Most people say that the great tribulation will last seven years. They calculate this using mostly the books of Daniel and Revelation. Yet in Matthew chapter twenty-four verse twenty-two it says that “if those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened.”
Do you think that maybe this means that the traditional seven years will be cut short? Comments welcome.

No, most people have never heard of “the great tribulation”.

When talking the Bible you can’t even begin to guess what it means until after it’s has apparently come to pass. How about those satana-grasshopper things that are supposed torment people in Revelation, no one has any idea what those really are…

@jlelandg ive got a theory about those beings that are supposed to torment people for five months.

The Great Tribulation starts the day that you are born and doesn’t end until they place your body in the ground.

How you deal with it is up to you.

The Tribulation will last zero days because it won’t happen.

When we think about the traditional concepts of the great tribulation, can we honestly imagine it being any worse than Jewish concentration camps, or American Indian massacre? There’s pah-lenty of tribulation going on in Ethiopia right now, among other places in the world.

The tribulation also warns us of being persecuted for our beliefs alone. That’s already happening around the world too, for being Gay, being Christian, or even being a certain type of Muslim, or Gypsy.

I don’t believe the traditional concept of the Christian Tribulation is an accurate assessment to what those purported prophesies really intend to convey. We’re not waiting on suffering to get here friend. It’s all around us and has been since the very beginning.

I actually put more credence into what @Blondesjon speaks of. It may seem he jests, but I don’t believe so. The seven years, or seven days, or seven candles, or seven horsemen are not to be taken so literally. It’s more likely that is a metaphorical statement to relate to seven noted phases, or eras, or stages. I’m sure a clever philosopher could map the phases out to five, six, or even seven if it pleases our lord.

Though I am interested in hearing more about @KeithWilson‘s theory of the “satana-grasshopper things” that @jlelandg speaks of.

Not…again…

What would Jesus say about this? Perhaps, “Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.”

Actually, I think Revelation was written about the immediate time John of Patmos was living through—the Roman persecution of Jews and Christians. And I think Genesis is about the here and now, and not the beginning of mankind.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

now there’s a generously genuine genesis exegesis

What is this great tribulation thing y’all are talking about?

Is it when everyone pays tribute en masse to something?

BoBo1946's avatar

Depends on the length of a year (our year compared to Biblical year). Like in Genesis, how long was God’s day! That has always confused me. Do we know….i don’t.

For when ye shall see the Abomination that maketh Desolate standing in the Holy Place. There shall be 1290 days but blessed is he who waits for the 1335 days.

@realeyesrealizereallies The Bible talks about these crazy things that come out of hell and torment people for a time. I forget the dimensions, but it’s scorpion like and flies. Would really suck if it comes to fruition like it reads. It’s basically the 5th trumpet judgement and someones interpretation goes like this:

In this judgment, the bottomless pit is opened up where a huge swarm of locusts are allowed to be released upon the earth. These locusts are only allowed to attack men who do not have God’s seal on their foreheads. They are not allowed to kill these men, but to only torment them with their bite. This verse tells us that their bite is like that of a scorpion and that this torment is allowed to last for 5 months.

By the way, I would consider myself a Christian, but have a big problem with how alot of the Christianity I grew up with completely rejects science and research.

Summum's avatar

Would you like to know what these so called creatures are.

Summum's avatar

I will help you decide what they are. Picture a person seeing something he is trying to explain that occurs in the future but he has a hard time describing the things he is seeing. How would you describe something you had no words for? For instance if he saw a train he may call it a large iron horse that makes loud sounds as it rushes through.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

Well thanks but I already have a few ideas of what the little buggars are. It could be anything from computer virus to swine flu. I’m just interested in what others think they are.

Summum's avatar

I know what they are but nobody wants to listen. So I will allow others to find for themselves.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Summum Well, I’m listening… so what are they?

Summum's avatar

. 7 And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men. 8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions. 9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle. 10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months. 11 And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

and sooooo….? what makes you of this? I’ve also asked a couple of times. I guess that makes me “nobody”... I like that.

KeithWilson's avatar

@Summum could those 1290 days be cut short as the bible says?

RealEyesRealizeRealLies's avatar

well if one considers the seven days of creation represent seven ages, then 1200 or more days could actually last an eternty… practically…

Summum's avatar

The 1290 days has been fulfilled already in 1981. Look at the latter part of the same information.

Sweetpea's avatar

Wow, I read 7 years, so I believed 7 years.

Summum's avatar

Do you really understand. This is for real
