What are the white patches appearing on my wifes skin?

Asked by john65pennington (29258points) November 30th, 2010

My wife just showed me her hands and arms and the white patches that are appearing on them. My wife is a retired nurse and she tells me the patches are the results of an overactive immune system and the patches are extra skin cells, produced by her body. She has an appointment with her doctor. Question: Is this a normal function of the human body? If so, is there a medication available to correct her overactive immune system and is this a dangerous situation?

It can be tinea, which is a fungus. Has she been in the sun? It usually becomes obvious when people get a little tan. But, usually it is roundish dots, but I don’t think it has to be.

I’ve gotten them in recent years. As @JLeslie says, they are more visible with a tan. I’ve been told by a dermatologist that they are from the sun and there is nothing that can be done about them. He didn’t say anything about them being a fungus or related to auto-immune issues. Not sure if that’s the same thing that your wife has though. I hate them. Curse you, aging!

@janbb I think doctors can be idiots, so you might want to look up tinea, I think you use the same drugs as what is in dandruff shampoo like Nyzoral, or maybe GYN yeast infection? It could just be an absence of melonin I guess, but the fungus does thr same thing, prevents the skin from getting tan.
