Gentlemen, admit it, you've had a man crush before or do right now. Who is he and why?

Asked by erichw1504 (26448points) November 30th, 2010

Man crush: A close but non-sexual relationship between two (or more) men, a form of homosocial intimacy. Source

Come on guys, don’t be ashamed. We’ve all highly admired some other guy before. Wether he’s a celebrity, political figure, or even a friend. Could be because of his looks, charm, money, lifestyle, etc.

Have you had one before or do you right now? Who is he? Why do you have a man crush on him? For how long? If he is a friend, does he know? Is it a bromance?

Let’s set our big balls egos aside and admit to our jelly friends who we think highly of and respect enough to have a man crush on!

Also, for the women, do you have a lady crush on someone?

I’ve never had a “close but non-sexual relationship” with celebrities, but I have no problem admitting I have some crushes. I’m not homosexual so I actually have no desire to do sexual things with them, but it’s more of an envy of their perfect looks lol. I have felt the same way about other men that I have known in the past, but I never acted on anything, although, unfortunately, I do feel I have been nicer to them.

I find the typical man with ‘masculine features’ attractive: Masculine jawlines, shaven, and chiseled bodies.

I have a man crush on James Franco right now. Don’t really know why, I just love his performances in any of the movies he’s been in and he seems like a really cool guy to just hang out with.

Interesting question – following.

Man on man love admiration is hot.

jlelandg's avatar

Current football man crush: Von Miller, my Universities favorite football player that just seems like a normal guy (except he’s really good at knocking the crap out of opposing team QB’s) ”

All-Time Man Crush: Cary Grant, the picture you see when you look up suave sexy bastard in the dictionary. Funny, great accent, excellent actor, if I were a woman I’d pleasure myself to his movies.

ucme's avatar

Oh, can I just add to the mix I love Santa! He so cute & wuverly :¬)

erichw1504's avatar

@jlelandg “if I were a woman I’d pleasure myself to his movies.”

Wow, you didn’t hold back at all, did you?

jlelandg's avatar

@erichw1504 no…I gave you honesty. And no I’m definitely not gay.

ANef_is_Enuf's avatar

My husband actually refers to his man-crush as his husband. It’s pretty much common knowledge.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

It is completely hilarious to me that the term ‘man crush’ is even necessary. Is there any other reason other than fear of being perceived as gay that brought this dumb construct into existence? Is it really not possible for a man to say ‘I admire this man for xyz reasons’ without other men thinking he wants him baaaaaad, like up the butt kind of sex bad? And why is that when women say this about other women, no sexual attraction is assumed?

submariner's avatar

I don’t see why admiration, respect, or friendship between males has to be couched in cutesy terms like “man crush”, “bromance”, and “homosocial intimacy”. The insinuation seems to be that any non-superficial relationship between two males has to have a sexual undercurrent to it. It hard enough for adult men to form genuine friendships with each other in US society without this kind of attitude undermining it.

nikipedia's avatar

wtf? Anyone I have a “lady crush” on, I definitely want to fuck.

downtide's avatar

What’s this “non-sexual” nonsense?

Me, John Barrowman, a bottle of wine and a bottle of lube.

Jude's avatar

@nikipedia‘s answer made me smile even more.

Blackberry's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I understand this, but some people don’t and actually think that way. I made a comment at work once about how some celebrity was a “Good-looking guy”, and I had to defend myself and explain to these people for 10 minutes that there is a difference between thinking someone is attractive and being attracted to someone.

Ron_C's avatar

I don’t get this whole “man crush” terminology. There, frankly, is no person, man or woman (except for my wife) that I admire enough to consider my feelings a crush.

I look with favor on Noam Chomsky, Martin Luther King, John Lenin, Dwight Eisenhower, Christopher Hitchens, and Alan Grayson. I wouldn’t even go as far as saying that I admire them let alone calling it a “man crush”. I like the way they think or thought but that’s as far as it goes. Besides I think this whole “man crush” terminoloty is a bit silly.

WillWorkForChocolate's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I was going to ask basically the same thing. Why do we feel the need to say “Oh I love so and so” of the same sex and then immediately follow it with “But I’m not gay”????

Anyway… my husband’s best friend has a “man crush” on Gerard Butler.

My husband crushes on Vin Diesel, just because of the “Fast and the Furious” movies.

Personally, I have a thing for Alyssa Milano, and Holly Marie Combs and Rose McGowan (the other two girls from the TV show “Charmed”), but keep the platonic bullshit out of it. I want ‘em naked.

Simone_De_Beauvoir's avatar

@Blackberry Well I guess we just have to keep reiterating to people that we see no need to call it that.

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Simone_De_Beauvoir I agree. I’ve had many a “man crush” on men whom I have absolutely no desire to sleep with or date – despite my being a woman. I do like “bromance”, because it brings to mind a certain relationship that starts out with mutual infatuation and becomes a lifelong partnership – much like (the ideal of) marriage without the sex – but that’s just me, and I use it regardless of the sexes involved. I cannot stand the term “girlfriends” because it conjures to mind an idea of teenage girls having a catty, frememy relationship in which each would sell the other down the river in a heart beat to get a boy.

BoBo1946's avatar

I’ve always liked the “kickass” guys….like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, etc. Crush, no… liked, yes.

Supacase's avatar

I have a crush on Reese Witherspoon. I am pretty sure, although he would never admit it, that my husband has a little guy crush on Matthew McConaughey.

mrlaconic's avatar

I love the guy who plays Eric Northman on true blood :D he is so hot!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I’m still trying to quantify wanting someone else up the butt bad.

jonsblond's avatar

@TheOnlyNeffie My husband has a husband too. It’s nice to see some people can take this question lightly and have a little fun with it. :)

erichw1504's avatar

@jonsblond That’s what I was going for…

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I came up with one: Alex Zanardi. Sucker loses both legs in a car crash and then a few days later he jokes with Max Papis about how much he’ll save on shoes from now on.

Ivan's avatar

I have a man-crush on Jesus.

erichw1504's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe Wow, I admire people who can brush themselves off so quickly after having suffered a terrible accident or event.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@erichw1504 That kind of guy I’ll have a crush on and admit it.

wundayatta's avatar

OMG! Do I have a crush! I think about him all the time. It’s not so much his looks, although I have done a screen capture of his online radio show, and printed it out, framed it, and put it on a shelf above my bed. Every night I light a candle so I can gaze upon his face in soft, romantic light.

But I have to say that my heart was just broken. I am absolutely desolated to find out that not only is he married to a woman (damn her shoelaces), but he also has a husband. I am crushed. I am in despair. I don’t know what to do.

Oh I know. I’ll ask a question. “My man crush has a husband he never told me about. Is there any hope for me? What should I do?”

Jude's avatar

I have a man thing for mammal. :)

cookieman's avatar

Harrison Ford

I’d be his wookie any day.

gondwanalon's avatar

Man crush? Bromance? Excuse me while I go and vomit!

Jude's avatar

@gondwanalon Don’t let the stall door hit you on the way out! :)

CaptainHarley's avatar

It IS possible to admire someone without wanting to get sexual with them, you know. I greatly admire General Colin Powell, but I have no desire to ever do more than shake his hand.

Haleth's avatar

@wundayatta Great post! I can’t exactly tell if you’re joking or serious, but I love it.

I had a girl crush on one of my friends for a long time. She’s super-talented, cute, quirky, and really, really nice. Her personality is a lot like Gir from Invader Zim. I also have a big crush on PJ Harvey. Be still my heart.

Ron_C's avatar

@CaptainHarley exactly. People coin phrases then try to fit others into them. It is a bit ridiculous. By the way, I would have put Gen. Powell on my list until he was suckered by the Bush regime. It’s a real shame, He would have been a greater presidential candidate than Obama. Too bad he was corrupted by his associations.

CaptainHarley's avatar

@Ron_C

I would have worked my ass off for him to get elected, had he decided to run.

kenmc's avatar

James Franco is dreamy.

TexasDude's avatar

I have a hardcore man crush on Teddy Roosevelt, but he’s dead.

I have a few close male friends that are extraordinarily intelligent, as well as classically handsome. Not saying I would bang them, but they are definitely attractive guys, and I’m glad they are my bros.

Fairylover78's avatar

” Lady Crush”? Sure, Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Jennifer Connelly are all super talented and yes indeed very hot. Weird that I would “crush” on the same chics my husband does huh? Not sure he’d feel the same about Johnny Depp, Russel Crowe or James Franco though…hmmmm. Oh and Jennifer Anistan has an incredible ass, just sayin’...

erichw1504's avatar

@Fairylover78 Mmmmm… Natalie Portman….... ~drools~.

Nially_Bob's avatar

Man crush? Pah! That doesn’t even scratch the surface. I’d attempt to mount Hugh Laurie if he so much as shook my hand.

Brian1946's avatar

I used to be really attracted to Johnny Depp from November, 1999 when we saw him in “Sleepy Hollow”, to sometime after we saw him in “Pirates of the Caribbean” in July, 2003.

After that I started neglecting poor Johnny because he wasn’t getting enough screen time to keep my deficient attention, but now I have much admiration for him because of this.

prolificus's avatar

As a boi, I’ve a man-crush on James Franco. Loved him in Howl!!!

rangerr's avatar

I agree with @nikipedia. Any girls I find attractive, I’d totally fuck them. And Niki is pretty damn high on my list. Her boobs are amazing.

thomascruz's avatar

I must admit I have a colossal man crush on Robert Plant and Jim Page. What can I say?

erichw1504's avatar

I also have a mild man crush on Robert Downey Jr. His goatee in the Iron Man films is epic.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

I’d like to say I have a man crush on Keith Urban, but the thought of having to do Nicole Kidman makes me want to flee into the night.

FutureMemory's avatar

I have a man-crush on Nullo.

ZAGWRITER's avatar

I guess you could say that I have one on Brad Pitt, ever since the Troy movie. I also used to have one for Kurt Russell, after he did the “Soldier” movie.

Brian1946's avatar

@FutureMemory

Does the regally handsome dude in his avatar have a part in your attraction? ;-)

Zaku's avatar

I wouldn’t go quite that far, but the following men (all film stars, in their roles) I like, admire, find handsome, charming, charismatic, etc.:

Fred Astaire, Cary Grant, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford. Hmm, that’s all that come to mind right away, though there are surely other performers.

FutureMemory's avatar

@Brian1946 He probably doesn’t want me to divulge specific details

MRSHINYSHOES's avatar

@Fiddle_Playing_Creole_Bastard I think I have a crush on you. (wink—lol)
