Meta Question

When you use the @user function to refer to the OP, why does it always take you to the top of the page?

Asked by bobbinhood (5898points) November 30th, 2010

Usually, the @user function takes you to the most recent quip by that user on the thread. However, when you are referencing the OP, it always takes you to the top rather than to his/her latest quip. Is this intentional? If so, why is it set up this way? I had assumed the purpose of that function was to aid in tracking individual discussions within the thread, but taking you to the top defeats that purpose. I’m clearly missing something…

Because they are the questioner. I never click on that when I am addressing them so I don’t ever go to the top of the page.

@marinelife I think I’m missing the significance of your answer. I feel kind of like I just asked, “Why does the Earth spin?” and you answered, “Because it’s the Earth.” Is there more to your thought than simply, “Because they are the questioner”?

@bobbinhood Sorry if I wasn’t any help. In many cases, the questioner has not posted a quip on the thread.

@marinelife That’s alright.

I’m not sure if this is intentional, or not. When we first got the @ function, you couldn’t @ the OP unless they had also posted an answer in the question. They had to do something to the code to make it so we could address the asker at all. Maybe it’s the only way it would work? I am technology deficient, so I’m probably wrong.

Auggie, did you change your Avi so you could hit on AstroChuck without being too creepy??? ;-)

Jill, you know me too well!

It’s a picture of me sitting on Santa’s lap (Santa as played by my dad!). I can’t find my regular Christmas avatar at the moment. I know it’s here somewhere.

Somebody has to teach me how to holiday-ize Zup.

Thanks, @augustlan. I’m officially intrigued… Do the people that live in the inner workings of the site surface and venture to meta on their own volition, or should I go ask them personally?

augustlan's avatar

@bobbinhood I check Meta several times a day to see if I can answer or find someone who can. If it’s something that affects just you, you can always send me a PM, but if it’s a site-wide question I’d rather see it in Meta. That way, everyone can benefit from it. :)

@augustlan I’ve noticed you float around this section a lot. It’s most helpful. :) With that last question, I was wondering about the people that live deep in the caves of code. Surely one of them would know why it is coded this way. At least, we hope they know why they do the things they do. ;)

@bobbinhood Sometimes they see a meta question and other times they’re buried too deep in that code cave. I sent them a note about this question, so hopefully one of them will pop in and answer this definitively.
