Do you enjoy musicals? If so, which is your favourite & what's your favourite song?

Asked by ucme (50047points) December 1st, 2010

Yeah, either stage or movie musicals shall be included. That’s all I can add really. Give me your fave tunes from that particular genre, that’s all.

I love, love, love musicals. One of my favorite songs from a musical is Till There Was You from The Music Man.

Yes,I do! This is from my favorite musical and probably my favorite movie :)

Here’s another one for ya…woof! Howard Keel….

I’m in love with a girl named Fred, from Once upon a mattress.
It would be hard to pin down a favorite musical.

I think the idea of musicals is absolutely idiotic; however, I’m a sucker for them. As far as a favorite piece I’d have to say Bitch Bitch Bitch from Jeckyl and Hyde (this version is horrible, but the only example I could find) or Springtime for Hitler from the Producers. (and yes I realize that most people consider the old producers much better, but I like Roger’s part of the song).

Choreography in White Christmas.

Yes Robin Hood is by far my favorite!

The first one that popped into my head was The Sound of Music, but I’ve also seen plays of Oliver that were great (didn’t care for the movie version as much) but the original stage version featured Davy Jones, aged 14, as the Artful Dodger before he became one of The Monkees singing group. I’ve seen Davy perform about 25 times and I would have loved to have seen him in Oliver.

You can count me in with the crowd who enjoyed The Music Man. And I also love Hairspray (the original movie version with Ricki Lake and Divine).

But the best musical play I ever saw was a musical version of the comic character Luann by Greg Evans the cartoonist.

I love musicals.

Chicago is my favorite, but I can’t pick a song. I like too many songs from too many musicals.

DominicX's avatar

Yes, I do. The Phantom of the Opera is the greatest musical ever, followed by Wicked. “Defying Gravity” is definitely my favorite song from Wicked. Not sure about Phantom.

I love musicals going all the way back to Busby Berkeley’s. My favorites change as I change, and right now, my favorite song is “He Had It Comin’” from Chicago.

Fairylover78's avatar

Im going to go with the couple I have seen on broadway…. Wicked was an amazing show and had loads of great songs, Defying Gravity was awesome.

Also Mary Poppins, it was better than I expected and hey, who doesn’t love Supercalifragilisticespialadocious…or however that is spelled ;) Chicago and Mulan Rouge were fun too, can’t pick a song though.

Fairylover78's avatar

oh and does Greece count? the first one anyway….

@mammal Not a razor between em! Little known factoid for ya….That movie features Paul Michael Glaser…..more familiar to some, me included, as cool… cardigan wearing… stripey car driving… Starsky. Pointless information is a specialty of mine!

People stop and stare they don’t bother me
Cause there’s nowhere else on earth that I would rather be
Then how come am I up three stories high
Cause I’m here on the street where you live.

That song got me into acting, favorite musical would have to be Grease.
Favorite one I was in would have to be Guys and Dolls.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

Wicked is definitely my favorite, hands down. The “Defying Gravity” scene never fails to give me goosebumps.

Spamalot would be my second choice.

BoBo1946's avatar

Oh yes… love the dinner theaters!

I love Bat Boy: THE MUSICAL. The you tube clips are mostly dodgy but Comfort and Joy gives a decent idea of what it’s like.

I ‘ve also got a soft spot for the Pirates of Penzance and the Three Penny Opera though I haven’t seen the latter. Pirate-y.

fundevogel's avatar

Actually I love The Black Rider more than any of those but I’ve never managed to see it.

downtide's avatar

I’m not a great fan of musicals generally but I love Phantom of the Opera. (But the book was even better). My favourite song from Phantom is Music of the Night

rangerr's avatar

Not even gonna lie, guys. I love Cats.
The entire thing.

Kardamom's avatar

@Dr_Dredd I Almost forgot, but you sparked my memory. I saw “He’s Not the Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy” with Eric Idle as the host. It was funny, but it also had some of the best songs and vocalists I’ve ever heard. It was more like an Opera.

Dr_Dredd's avatar

@Kardamom Cool! Was that on TV, or on the stage?

Kardamom's avatar

@Dr_Dredd I saw that in Los Angeles at the Hollywood Bowl about 2 years ago. The premier was the night before we saw it. I’ve loved Eric Idle since I was about 14 years old and it was a real treat to see him.

Definitely a musical theatre fan here. I flew to Europe from Australia for the Les Misérables 25th Anniversary Tour. (Well, I was going to go at some point, but that’s what I based my trip around)

Favourite songs at the moment, let’s see…
“On the Steps of the Palace” from Into the Woods
“Now (It’s Just the Gas)” from Little Shop of Horrors (seriously, best death scene ever, makes me wish I were male so I could do it)
“Lily’s Eyes” from The Secret Garden just listen to it being sung by the two greatest voices in musical theatre of our time
“Vanilla Ice Cream” from She Loves Me

Anyway, better stop before I get carried away. And now everyone knows why we never play my ipod at parties.

Does anyone in this thread watch Glee or is it just me?

Trillian's avatar

Let’s build a snowman from Cannibal, the musical is pretty great too.

filmfann's avatar

@Trillian I love Cannibal! The Musical. Good call.
My favorite is Porgy and Bess, which is actually Opera.
My favorite song is the Flesh Failures from Hair. (it starts at 2:52)

OpryLeigh's avatar

I love musicals! My favourites are are you ready?:

Les Miserables
Sunset Boulevard
Evita
Show Boat
Billy Elliot
Miss Saigon
The Phantom of The Opera
Fiddler on the Roof
Priscilla Queen of the Desert

One Day More from Les Mis is a favourite of mine definitely.

ariah's avatar

The Lion King on Broadway was AMAZING. I would have to say it makes it on my list of top 5 favorites, but all my others are already listed a ton of times. If done right, both Little Shop of Horrors and Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat are really good.
If you want a non-stop musical kind of thing, I personally enjoy watching Glee… Their covers of songs tend to be better than the originals, in my opinion.

@TheatreGirl I saw Shrek recently and didn’t rate it at all. I recommend Love Never Dies before it closes at the end of August.

downtide's avatar

Since I wrote my original answer, I actually went to see my first musical a few weeks ago. It was Avenue Q and it was absolutely brilliant.
