Who does the DIY jobs in your home?

Asked by partyparty (9162points) December 5th, 2010

Are your DIY tasks shared or, like me, are they left to one member of the family?
In my home we have clearly defined jobs.
For instance, we will be putting the Christmas up shortly. My SO will secure the tree in a pot and place it in the lounge. Then his job is done. I will then decorate the tree.
We are snowed in at the moment and my SO will clear the snow from the drive. I keep him going with cups of tea and biscuits.
I am not allowed near a drill or a saw etc. He doesn’t go anywhere near the kitchen to cook etc.
How does it work in your home?

I’m the only one here, so…me. Actually, I’m usually the one anyway, in whatever situations I’ve lived. I seem to have a freakish talent for all the DYI stuff.

My partner does anything electrical, or anything to do with plumbing. I do wood, walls and painting. Big jobs, we pay someone else to do it.

I do it unless it’s something I need my landlord to sort (e.g. boiler, major structural stuff) and I’m quite proud to have learnt a lot about DIY. If I’m not sure I’ll ask my Dad and he’ll tall me how to do it or show me.

@perspicacious Are you male or female?
@marinelife Exactly like me :)
@JilltheTooth You are so fortunate to be able to do DIY. I just wouldn’t have a clue where to start!
@BoBo1946 Doesn’t Sadie ever help you?!!!
@downtide You are so fortunate to share the jobs.
@nebule Yes dads can be very useful when giving advice can’t they?
@Thesexier So you are quite competent at DIY?

Alex does the DIY jobs because that’s his thing – he builds and sews and cooks and comes up with crazy solutions. I’d fall apart without him or you know, hire people. My focus in outside the home, in terms of my purpose.

I love DIY jobs and will attempt most of them.As for cooking?I’d rather hit my thumb with a hammer. ;)

We share the DIYs. I do all the painting and some plumbing and small electrical (like rewiring a lamp). He does the big plumbing and electrical jobs and most but not all of the building projects.
I take care of all the tree and shrubbery trimming unless it requires a chainsaw, I won’t touch that. Furniture and small household repairs are my job.

My wife is good at everything and I pretty much suck at everything. For big jobs, we call the landlord.

Milo here: Gail does everything, of course.

We all do them as my patience will permit. My boys know most trade skills and will be well prepared for their own DYI projects when they set out on their own. :)

My husband and I share pretty much every household task when he is home. I have to be able to manage everything since he is away for extended periods of time, so relying on only him would set me up for a lot of frustration. We share all the DIY stuff, along with the household chores, parenting, car maintenance, and anything else that comes up.

My boyfriend is the master of DIY! It’s notthat I can’t do it, it’s just that, things seem to bother him more than tey do me. For example, my shower had been a little weak lately but it still spurted out enough water for a decent shower. So, I just leave it. Next thing I know, he is taking the shower head apart, cleaning it all out and now it’s a billion times better!

She cooks I screw…...if you get my drift! :¬)

I do everything myself, unless I need an expert for, say,, gas work or major electrical work.. I’m pretty self sufficient, well I have to be, I live with two cat’s & all they do is eat ,sleep, pee & crap!! DIY is my middle name to my friends, those who let me tinker with my tools over their place anyway…

BarnacleBill's avatar

I do it all.

I’m female and my SO is male, we do have particular chores/duties.

He picks up the dog poop in the backyard.
He rolls out the garbage/recycle bins to the curb.
He runs the carpet machine on spots and spills.

I make the household budget.
I make the grocery shopping lists.
I do most of our laundry.

We both work together on jobs we can’t get our adult grandsons or hire a handyman to do. Just recently, we replaced the lightbulbs in our recessed lighting. It turned into a real job when the ballasts had to be replaced, but I cleaned the fixture covers, and carried in the ladder, and hubby removed the ballasts and replaced the bulbs.

We had the toddlers over the weekend, so they went with us to buy the new parts, and I wheeled them around in the cart to look at all the holiday lights while hubby found the replacement parts.

I’m sure I could squeeze you in ;-)
Somewhere after the 18th…. I’m re-decorating my house at the minute for the holidays, the painting is nearly finished & there’s some carpet to go down & some wall paper to go up…. Yeah I should be done by the 18th, just so long as the spuds (cats) don’t lend a paw that is! :-/

partyparty's avatar

@Scooby See you on the 19th then… will have cake and coffee ready for you!!

Scooby's avatar

@partyparty

I do all the DIY stuff in our house. Especially with furniture projects (which are my favorite thing in life!) If you ever do any DIY furniture updates you should check out my stuff. www.sijolie.wordpress.com
But as far as like normal day to day house responsibilities..we pretty much split that stuff up.

partyparty's avatar

@notabridesmaid Wow that is pretty impressive stuff :))

notabridesmaid's avatar

@partyparty Thanks!!! I haven’t been working at it very long, but its so much fun that now I just find random furniture for sale just so that I have a new DIY project.LOL

partyparty's avatar

@notabridesmaid Yes and you are recycling rather than them being thrown away. Your projects are just wonderful.
Thanks for letting me see them :-)
