How are our European jellys coping with the lousy weather?

Asked by Adirondackwannabe (36713points) December 6th, 2010

I see on the news Winter is not being kind to your continent. How are you guys adapting and can we give any tips, advice, etc? Let us know how you’re holding up.

The snow in the UK has caused plenty of travel disruption (as it does every time!). Last week I was stuck on the motorway for nearly 9 hours after a lorry jack-knifed due to heavy snow/ice on road. That wasn’t fun! Other than that, the worst I have had to deal with is not being able to get my car door open because my lock had frozen up but a bit of anti-freeze soon did the trick! Luckily, my part of the country hasn’t had it nearly as bad as some others.

@Leanne1986 I like the nice positive attitude. It’s not unusual for us to get snowed in completely for days at a time. We just hunker down and wait it out.

We haven’t been able to get out of our lane for three days now.
Snow, then a slight thaw, then freezing over at night has caused our lane to become a skating rink.
Fortunately the farmer came up with his tractor and salted for us, so yippppeeeee we went out shopping today!
Arrived at the store and no milk & no bread as the delivery van wasn’t able to get to the store.
We had to get some Alpro milk .. my SO thinks it is disgusting!

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@partyparty What’s Alpro milk, or do I not want to know?

partyparty's avatar

@Adirondackwannabe It is soya milk – here it is
I quite like it actually, but my SO thinks it should be banned LOLL

@partyparty Thanks! I’ve been thinking of trying one of the non dairy milks just haven’t decided which one. Someone had an interesting ice cream recipe I also wanted to try.

@Adirondackwannabe Seeing as we don’t get weather like this all year round I tend to enjoy it while it lasts, after all, we sometimes get a free day off work because of health and safety!!! I wouldn’t be quite so positive if we did get it all year round though.

@Leanne1986 We’re getting Lake Effect snow today. We’ve got six inches on theground, another 5 to 6 expected tonight. It’s no big deal, plus it makes me appreciate Summer that much more. Spring in about 5 to 6 months. Yay

Hey @Adirondackwannabe We’re getting lake effect here too. (Western NY) Looks like 7 inches so far.
The plows have been rumbling down our road 3 times already.

Adirondackwannabe's avatar

@worriedguy It usually stays to our North, so it’s not common. We don’t get the monster ones like you guys out there. At least it’s pretty.

No one has mentioned that in the US the news stated, “Europe will have the worst winter in one thousand years.”

tedibear's avatar

@Aster – I heard that on the news, too. And one of my Facebook friends in Germany said it’s the worst winter they’ve had in 80 years.

I’m in NE Ohio and we have a winter storm warning through Tuesday at 7PM. Lucky me, I have a hair appointment in the middle of the snowbelt tomorrow morning! I’m okay driving in this since I grew up in Western NY, but honestly some people act like they’ve never seen snow! It’s lake effect people! Get used to it!

It’s bitterly cold here though we’ve not had as much snow (so far) as we had last year. Wearing lots and lots of layers. Last night I was waiting for a bus for half an hour and even with gloves on I felt like my fingers were going to drop off. The current temperature, at 8am, is -7C. If we’re lucky it’ll get up to -3.

I believe Scotland are having it really bad. Here is a news item

We had 20 inches of snow in one night, and then a further 6 inches over the next few days, which caused understandable chaos. I can work from home, and we were well stocked up with food etc., so it wasn’t too much of a drama, but my partner works in a hospital and had a lot of hassle getting to work on the train – the car was out of the question. The cats weren’t happy either – the cat flap has snowed up during the night and we had to dig them a trench out of the house!

Generally, because of our position at the end of the Gulf Stream, any snow we do get is usually light and gone within 24–48 hours, so as a country we’re not really tooled up for dealing with this prolonged and more severe spell of cold.

I was talking with a customer in Scotland today, and they had it down to about -14C last night.

I love the snow and the cold – I’m happy.

I had no idea! Every time I talk to my mom, who lives in Italy, she says that the weather is horrible.. I just didn’t realize the whole of Europe was having horrid winter weather like you all have relayed! Wow.. sounds pretty bad. My mom is going to be hating life this winter, as she is right on the sea and it gets piercingly cold and unbelievably windy, which means huge seas and sea water blown everywhere. In fact, she had to run to the store during a recent storm and a freak wave slapped off the pier and drenched her.

Now’s probably not a good idea to mention the 60 degree, mostly sunny conditions here?

I’m getting ready to go to Thailand, hopefully not so much snow there !!

That’s how I’m coping :)

KasperPrip's avatar

I use to get all depressed in the winter, but last year and this year with all the snow, instead of just mud and cold weather was actually a really nice change. But then again last year we had snow for four straight months, i don’t hope that will happen again.
There’s a danish saying though a long strong winter makes for a warm and beautiful summer, that was true last year!

I’m a commuter fighting snow since the end of November. Germany has not seen that much snow in December for decades.
