How do I fix my dell dimension desktop?

Asked by suassive (44points) December 9th, 2010

I have a dell dimension 4100 with windows ME installed. I was upgrading to windows XP but when it restarted after the upgrade was done it gave me an error saying Remove disks or other media. Now it won’t let me access windows XP or anything. It will just reboot the computer and the error message will show again. How do I fix this problem?

Right as you see the windows loading screen (shortly after the computer turns on) press F8 to bring up a boot menu. Select the option to have windows not restart on error. Find out what the error is and post it here and then I or someone can tell you how to fix it.

Most likely you will have to start the windows Install again, but post the error here anyways incase there is a chance it can be resolved.

If your machine is old enough to be running Windows Me, the BIOS might not support XP. You can get that here:

http://support.us.dell.com/support/downloads/format.aspx?releaseid=R45081

The date on the BIOS is 2002, but it might be more recent than what you have on your system now. You’ll need to find a 3.5” floppy disk for this. That can be tricky if you don’t have any lying around.
