Where can I get a less expensive nice camera?

Asked by littlekori (676points) December 10th, 2010

I love photography, I have taken so many classes as my school and I am really trying to make something out of it. The problem is , cameras are so expensive. And I am not just talking about a small digital camera that you get from Wal-mart, but a nice Nikon or Canon digital camera specifically for photography. They usually are no less than $500 dollars, and I just can’t afford that on my own.
So does anyone know of anywhere, any websites, and stores, where I could possibly pick one up for cheaper?

Well, I don’t know where you live but where I live in NJ, there’s some cheap good prices in RadioShack where you can buy a nice Nikon or Canon,it just depends on which RadioShack you go to though because the prices might br different.Ever tried going to BJ’s or Coscos, they have some pretty good prices too from what I seen. Have you considered other stores like Target or Macy’s even? Why don’t you also look up on the internet as well where you can even look up the best cameras you’re looking for and that you can afford as well maybe like amazon or websites that are related to the stores I mentioned?

I second e-Bay. I bought a nice camera on there from a professional photographer for half of what it cost new. The photographers I know always sell extra gear on there.

If you really want to learn photography, I think working with a film camera would be an excellent way to start, because there’s a lot that you can do with film that still can’t be as well done digitally. But film cameras are out of fashion these days because of the convenience and proliferation of digital, which means that you can probably find excellent used film cameras sitting on shelves from coast to coast, and pick one up for a song.

I have a couple of Sony a200 kits I’m getting ready to sell on eBay. PM me if you’re interested. That camera is by far the best bang for the buck in the used market. Get the kits for around $300 each depending upon accessories.

I may part with my a700 as well. I only shoot with my a900’s these days and I’ve closed down a portion of my business where I needed the smaller megapixel cameras… so I won’t be needing the smaller cameras any longer.

I have found that local camera shops have used gear about 20% cheaper than what you find on eBay… But you have to pay sales tax on it so it works out to about the same price anyway.

Good Luck!

I got the answer just right for this, I hope. The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX5. (water proof, Shock proof, and freeze proof. It also comes with a touch screen 3.5 LED screen. Finally panorama is also included. You can buy this camera brand new averaging $312.00 or less.

I don’t think you can do any better than a medium format film camera for the price. There are some insane cameras like the pentax 67 going for $400 with a lens.

If you’ve learned the basics you will get better photos with film.

But if you want to shoot many photos for cheap I’d reccomend a digital pentax because you can use many of the old manual lenses with it.

You can actually buy a used slr for cheap in sites like craigslist and fredmiranda.com.

I think film is best though for personal photography.
