Will you help me here at the end of my algebra journey?

Asked by Dutchess_III (46812points) December 11th, 2010

I took the final today. It seemed insanely easy…and that alone scares me! Until the 15th I have the opportunity to improve my homework scores. Out of 42 lessons (each of which has 10 – 35 questions in it) I have 100% on all but 1, which I have an 80 in. But this one problem is kicking my heiney. Will you help me out one more time guys?

Q: Find the equation of the line that contains the given points. Write the equation in slope-intercept form, if possible.
(1.4,0.9) and (0.6,0.4).

So y=??????

Thanks

1) To find the slope, you use the following formula:

slope formula: m = [y1 – y2] / [x1 – x2]

2) Now you have the slope and two points. You can find the equation (by solving first for ”b”) if you have a point and the slope. So, you need to pick one of the points (it doesn’t matter which one), and use it to solve for b. Using the point (1.4, 0.9), plug in the m value you found above. Just as an example, say you found m=3:

y = mx + b
0.9 = 3(1.4) + b
solve for b

3) Take the m and b values you found above and plug them into the slope-intercept form of y = mx + b. As an example, I’ll use m=3 and b=5:

y = 3x + 5

Alternatively, once you know the slope, you can use the point-slope form.

y – y’ = m(x – x’), where the point is (x’,y’). Just rearrange the result to get it into slope-intercept form.

Dutchess_III's avatar

See…that’s what it would seem like, but the answer is going to be something like 0.25x + 0.075 or something…..

Ivan…?

m = (0.9 – 0.4) / (1.4 – 0.6) = 0.5/0.8 = ??

Start with that.. Ivan’s is confusing me. :]

The slope is 5/8. So, using the first point (it doesn’t matter), y – 9/10 = 5/8(x – 7/5). Rearrange this to find y = (5/8)x + 1/(40)

The formatting screws up if I don’t use that last set of parentheses.

@MissAnthrope No…that’s not it either. To be perfectly honest, I’m cheating my butt off! I have unlimited attempts at the questions, and I’ve learned that eventually they repeat. So I just keep a log of each question until it either repeats, or I get an “A HA!” moment just from the repletion and figure it out (I had a 92% before, when I wasn’t cheating, but I just want to cover all my bases in case the final didn’t go as well as it seemed like it did….I’m now up to a 94.3, and only 3 questions to go….

OK, I’ve clicked “attempt a similar problem” 28 times now, and it’s not repeating (It’s like Evil Pi, man!!) However, throughout every attempt, the answers have been like this:
0.25x+0.175
.25x+0.375
.125x+0.945
.625x+1.275
.875x+.425
.125x+.575
.75x+.675
.25x+.375
.25x+.025
...like that. They all end with a 5.

Ivan's avatar

5/8 = 0.625
1/(40) = 0.025.

y = 0.625x + 0.025

^^ That’s what I got, too.

o shit. Hell, it would have taken a lot less time if I’d just figured out how to do it in the first place! Geez. I feel stupid. Thanks for the help…

OK. Now I’m looking for the equation in slope intercept form. (-10,5) slope = -3/5.
One more after this, then I’m done! I’m sneaking into the 10K mansion through the basement window and having a party right under the stuck-up people’s nose!!!...You with me? O. Wait. You’re both already One of Them….OK. Will you unlock the window for me??

MissAnthrope's avatar

It’s the same deal. Slope = m = -3/5. You have your set of points. You just need to solve for b.

5 = (-3/5)-10 + b

Solve that, then you’re pretty much done. You just plug the m and b values into the y = mx + b formula.

@MissAnthrope waaah. I don’t want to think ANYMORE! I don’t want to even add -10 + -10 =2! I’m so close, so close. I haven’t had a day to myself since July, and I’m 2 questions away from freedom…please give me the answer. please? I’ll save you some natty lite in the basement…

MissAnthrope's avatar

I mean this in the kindest way possible.. Do I want to help you cheat on your test? No, I don’t. :] Not to mention it’s against the rules and they’ll probably beat me with sticks or something.

What you have left here is really easy. I understand the mental fatigue, I really do.. but maybe if you take a break and come back? It’ll take you like 2 minutes to finish!

Dutchess_III's avatar

@MissAnthrope I took the final today.

MissAnthrope's avatar

Okay, cheat on your homework, then? Same answer!

You’re being silly! The problem is almost done.. it’s laid on your plate and all ready to go. :)

Dutchess_III's avatar

FINE!!! I FIGURED IT OUT!!! One more and I’ll have 100% on all 50 gamillion questions.

One to go Is the basement window unlocked?

I’M FINISHED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&%%%%%%%%%%%%%###############$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$)))))))))))))))))))))))))@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%$&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@i’m finished!!!!

Well, GOD loves me Miss A, even if you don’t! Cause on the last one he gave me the same question two times in a row. So there!

MissAnthrope's avatar

Yes, you’re right.. I totally hate you, which is why I just spent the past hour walking you through your homework problems. and without so much as a single GA for my troubles. Ha!

And congratulations! Good job.

Dutchess_III's avatar

LOL! OK, MOM! Man…oh man. I’m done. Did I tell you on top of having not been in school for 20 years, I managed to put myself in a accelerated class by accident! Geez. I’ve just been sick worrying about the test….but…..wow. I’m done. I have a 94.4 in the section test/homework section, and I think I did OK on the final today. I’m done.
Thanks @MissAnthrope Now, I shall promptly forget everything I just learned! Not really…it should help me a bunch with teaching Algebra to my students. I hope.
Thank you so much….I know it’s more work giving the idea than the answer, and thanks~ Did I mention I’m DONE!?

MissAnthrope's avatar

Hey, no need to explain to me, but that sounds awful (the accelerated learning part). I’ve never been a math whiz. I took Algebra, hrmm.. maybe 5 years ago? I had to look up the formula you needed before it came back to be how the hell to do it. I really have no idea how they expect you to remember the things you learned in your first semester by the time you get to your last semester.

Your question was actually good for me because it’s a math refresher, something I need because I’m not finished with school yet. I worked diligently and hard to understand Algebra and, to my surprise, I succeeded.. but I don’t want to get too rusty or lose it because that would be a shame.

slope=(y2-y1)/(x2-x1) where y2 is the y-coordinate of the second point, and so on
y-intercept=-mx+y where m=slope, x is the x-coordinate of a point, and y=y coordinate
Also, i personally recommend this website. You literally just have to type “line going through (1.4,0.9) and (0.6,0.4)” and it will graph it, find the equation. The website can also do many, many, many more things. Just click the examples tab.
