Could, should, Spirituality be considered as a form of Technology?

Asked by RealEyesRealizeRealLies (30951points) December 11th, 2010

You know, like hypnotism or meditation… Could prayer, trance, incense, ritual, shrines, talisman, hymns, wands, earth stones, dance, sacred oils, seance and sacraments be considered as a technology, a tool, to pursue a purpose that otherwise could not be achieved without them?

Even if that purpose was false… and the tools only allowed the user to deceive themselves, or bring about comfort and inner wholeness?

The problem lies in recognizing it as viable, as with hypnosis or meditiation its one of those things that has a placebo effect while one is actively partaking in said prayer, seance, or other observance but as soon as one needs to relinquish the efforts put forth to bring on the placebo effect for other activities the problem is going to return.

As far as meditation goes I speak only from my own experience, I attempted for years to use it to control my panic attacks and anxiety with the direction of a therapist but as soon as the meditation ended the panic promptly returned and, well you just can perpetually meditate

Such examples as you mentioned, I believe, can indeed be attributed to technology, when it comes to studying them and learning more, but essentially I would personally dump it with psychology (On the societal side, more specifically.) instead.
Although now that you mention it, if psychology is attributed to it, then most certainly, medical technology must be included in there, as well.

Not any time in the near future but eventually in about 50 to 100 years from now when human duality is confirmed as being an actual branch of nuclear physics only then will our society truely advance both morally and scientifically.

Moral reasons: Not if but when death is confirmed to be impossible only then will the truths about what really happens when we all pass on (from what Sir William Crookes and Sir Oliver Lodge confirmed from their laboratory experiments just to mention a few), the universal law of cause and effect serves universal justice whether we are aware of this law or not. Scientific verification of surviving physical death will have a major impact on the way people behave. It will be scientifically supported that we all will have to pay for our evil deeds and there is no such thing as “getting away with it”. There will be no more people hiding behind “belief’ to save them either or the concept of a “Saviour” who did the work for us or the belief that one religion is more correct over another. Corporate and political corruption will also come to a virtual standstill. This will all be very positive for all of us when science verifies all of this.

Technology: This will open a whole new branch of scientific discoveries. The ability to materialise/dematerialise matter including ourselves will allow an advanced form of space travel as well as the abilty to create essential necessities such as water, food and other materials. This would probally allow us to avoid destroying the planet by using fossil fuels since transportation would be much easier. Telepathy will obviously come in handy as well. This will unite spirituality with science and give all of us a refreshing view of where we fit into the universe and give everyone a greater purpose.

I don’t think it is technology. It is man’s attempt to improve himself, but it does not use mechanical things.

No, I think it should not be thought as technology.

The reason I think so is because it deals with the mind(physics) and spirits. You don’t have to build anything to connect with a ghost. Spirituality is more in the religious category than technology, and sort of in it’s own, depending on how people use it for. Plus, it’s always going to have cons. When you are spiritual, so much that spirits visit you, you have to make sure which door to use, or it could be very dangerous. Also, you have to have no fear of spirits, because maybe one spirit will be bad(a demon), and that can be fatal, depending on how you react. Technology is different. You don’t expect to be attacked by your own electronic, and if you are, it’s not like it has a mind of it’s own. Perfectly not intentional. Demons decieve you and can pretend to be something they’re not. There’s a risk with the spirit world because doors will open and you have to hide your fear, if you have any.

Also, ouija boards don’t help you, if you think that does.. It can attract different spirits, and it can be pretty scary if you don’t know enough about the spirit world.

Oh, and prayer is more religious. Trance is a different type. Won’t attract the paranormal, just going into the mind(probably another form of spiritual). Wands, earth stones.? Yeah, they’re probably part of witch craft (or religious), and I wouldn’t consider them techno. either. Shrines and the other stuff wouldn’t be considered techno. to me, but religious, maybe the mind spiritual stuff.
