It’s cold, it’s windy, it’s mean (crime, gangs, drugs, etc), and there’s less fluff and more corruption in the politics.

Great food, great nightlife (especially live music and comedy), great shopping, great museums, semi-good sports teams :P. It’s one of the greatest cities in the world.

I live two hours away. Hope I can still answer.

Brr…
Ugh, hot and humid.
Corrupt politics.

I wouldn’t mind visiting. The city has a lot of history. Maybe in the Spring.

Your pizzas are really cakes.
That is all.

@Michael_Huntington : Just a nugget of info. I’ve yet to meet a Chicagoan who regularly eats deep dish pizza. We eat the same style as everyone else. Except it is yummier. Espicially by California standards. There is some nasty pizza in California.

I love Chicago. I’m taking my Mom to the Signature Lounge at the 95th for her 90th birthday and also to the Planetarium (she loves stars and the universe). Whadda ya think?

By the way, my idea of Chicago is it a great place to visit, great food, great entertainment, great shopping…..

MyNewtBoobs's avatar

@Les Oh, thank God. I mean, how is one supposed to have a poker game and order a pizza when everyone has to eat the pizza with a knife and fork? Defeats the whole point. I definitely think more of you as a group now.

I think that’s fantastic!! Happy birthday, Mom!!!

My second favorite American city.

The first is Cleveland.

zenvelo's avatar

My business division is based there, so I visit regularly. It’s fun to visit, but I couldn’t live there. This California boy needs hills.

City of big shoulders.

Chicago is as good as it gets! Great everything….yes, lots of crummy aspects but we have Millennium Park and the Bean, plus House of Blues, the Sears Tower Sky Deck and tons of art fairs all across the city and suburbs!! Plus home of the beloved Chi Cubs!! Chicago ROCKS!!

marinelife's avatar

I think of it as an energetic city with vibrant neighborhoods, great jazz and great museums.

Cubs & bulls & bears oh my! The windy city I associate with Gangsters of yesteryear, you know….the “Chicago mob.” That’s just me though…....crass & immature a speciality XD

Do the suburbs count? I’ve been to them a lot and loved them. But I haven’t been to the city. I recently was told that their deep dish pizza is out of this world.
My “idea” of it is gray skies, freezing cold in winter with gorgeous flowers in spring, humid days in summer. And terrific food. I never got a feeling the people were outgoing and friendly but that may just be the particular people I met and knew. dying to try the pizza, though. I do miss Oakbrook Shopping Center. Very impressive.

Cruiser's avatar

You pretty much nailed it @Aster…Oakbrook is a great Mall too plus has Drury Lane Theater!!

When I think of Chicago I think of water, not just the lake but the river too. We have figured out how to keep it for play and beauty. Jump on a water-taxi and then tell me I am wrong. (Okay, swimming in the river is not the best idea. It is still pretty to look at though.) It is a city that has paid attention to offering quiet spaces that escape the hustle and bustle, if you pay attention. I also think of over 200 diverse neighborhoods. Summer and fall in Chicago is a magical time. Street festivals fill neighborhoods with alive music, vibrant art, tapestries of food, and active community. Speaking of art, our art scene isn’t to shabby and theatre in Chicago is a hidden gem.

The first thing I think of is the pizza. The second thing I think about is that Obama considers Chicago his home base. The next thing I think of is that it’s a bustling metropolis, a little too big and scary and crowded for this Fluther. The next thing I think about is the fact that there must be tons of really great cultural things to see and do and restaurants to visit. I would like to visit, but I don’t think I could live in a big city. Then I think of the song My Kind of Town Chicago by Frank Sinatra. And then I think of the Sears tower as being the tallest building in the U.S. but then I can’t recall if it still is, or not. And then I think of the band Chigago and the song 25 or 6 to 4 and have no idea what that means, but I like the guitar riff in the middle of it.

Les's avatar

@Kardamom : It is a reference to the time of day, specifically 3:35 or 3:34 AM. 25, or 6 (minutes), to 4 (AM).

Cool and windy, with awesome pizza!!

We stopped to eat at Gino’s East, just for fun, on our way back to Texas from Wisconsin.

AmWiser's avatar

Just got in from the Windy City, loved it. The food, the people, the shopping, the sites, everything was just awesome. And the Signature Lounge at the 95th is a must see for anyone visiting Chicago. I’m saving up to go back in May for a graduation.

I think the NHL champion Blackhawks can be considered an exception to that.

Chicago is known for its architectural marvels and its cultural diversity.
