What is with the psycho kitten avatar?

Asked by MissAnthrope (21511points) December 20th, 2010

When you go to edit/choose your avatar, there’s a stock selection. But it’s like playing “One of these things is not like the other”!

All the photos are jellyfish and that makes total sense. Except one. It’s a freaky weird psycho kitten. It’s also the only one that has no attribution, and thus, is completely shrouded in mystery.

What is the meaning of this?

Haha, I’ve wondered this myself. I always thought it looked a lot like spaghetti cat from The Soup.

It’s even more unnerving to see the enlarged version in user profiles.

I know, right?

I used to know the story behind this, but I’ve forgotten! Stupid memory. :/

If I remember Tim’s answer from another question (or was it Andrew or Ben?) it just was kinda thrown in there when they were designing things, and then they just never got rid of it.

This coming from the woman with an avatar of a raccoon humping a dog.

Hahaha… I hadn’t even noticed that!

I have wondered what that kitten is for too because fluther is a marine type site. And how come people dont choose sharks and dolphins and fish for their avatars as well….?

It reminds me of how cats are always lurking around the fish tank. :D

@PiedPfiefer had asked Ben a few months ago and she shared his answer with me:

Ben responded to the question about the cat avatar. Here it is:

“The story goes like this: the very first day we were launching avatars on Fluther (I’d say June 07), we were lining up jellyfish photos (some we’d taken, some from Flickr), and Andrew sneaked in a picture of his then-girlfriend’s cat Bacio (pronounced bo-cho). He didn’t ask me because he knew I probably wouldn’t approve, but once people were using it as their avatar, we couldn’t take it away, so there wasn’t much to be done. I agreed it was pretty funny, too, if not a little random. And it’s blurry because we don’t have an original copy of the photo anymore—and we increased the size of the avatars.
Hope that helps unravel the mystery. :)”

@chyna – Thanks! :)

Bacio means “kiss” in Italian.. making the avatar even funnier to me. That kitty looks nothing like a kiss I want any part of. Haha.

@FutureMemory – Pssshhh. My avatar is epic.
