Would you like to share stories of when P2P, batch programming and IRC were starting?

Asked by XOIIO (18328points) December 22nd, 2010

It greatly saddens me to know that IRC is almost dead. I wan’t born to experience IRC in it youth, but in it’s time there were many other great things going on. P2P was less commong, batch and VBS scripting were used to exploit school computer systems and prank people, programming seems to have been much more common, and the right people could to great things. Would you like to tell any stories of those gloryfull days, so that one teen who wishes he could have been there to experience it can get a better idea of what it was like?

Well, back in my day (the ‘90s), the IRC was like the Wild West. You had chatrooms about everything and anything and no one was policing or watching them, whatsoever. I definitely had an IRC period and made lots of friends there. In fact, I started hanging out in a channel called #Anal_Sex, which I entered one day out of boredom and curiosity, and found that no one talked about anal sex; it was actually a bunch of smart, goofy people that I totally hit it off with. We talked about a variety of subjects. In fact, I made some friends there that helped me through a dark time in my life, after I had my heart ripped out for the first time.

IRC is where you went to get free porn. You went into certain channels to trade videos and pictures. The bad side of the IRC is that quite a lot of child pornography was being passed around. It was very easy to get and very anonymous, not to mention that no one was watching.

I kinda miss the old days. I remember running out and buying the cheapest modem I could find (used) and being so excited I got a 14.4 baud, woo! I miss the day of BBSes. That’s what I used to do all day instead of Fluther. :P

Man, I wish I had been part of all that excluding the child porn. t’s too bad stuff like this went down the drain.

I should say that it’s not an either-or.. I definitely love how the internet has developed! I just wish the BBSes still existed.. there were all kinds of games a SysOp could get to run on theirs. Some were really fun. I think my favorite was a space colonization game and I keep hoping someone will put out a game that’s similar, because I enjoyed it so much and I want to play it again!

Yeah, and text based adventure games, not to mention telnet videos.
