Can you help me correctly set up this Macbook to use as a wireless router for my Wii?

Asked by asmonet (21445points) December 24th, 2010

I’m at my mom’s house for Christmas and she doesn’t have cable or a very large selection of movies, I brought my Wii so we could watch some stuff on Netflix Instant.

Turns out her router broke, and she’s waiting for a new one which she neglected to tell me. I’m not a Mac user, and I’ve done my best googling how to get this done but for some reason it isn’t working. So, I turn to Fluther!

INFO:
This laptop is running Mac OS X Version 10.5.8
I’ve turned on Internet Sharing (Ethernet shared to Airport)

I’ve even tried testing it on my iPhone – I can see the network, it asks for the password I set but it only ever says 3G.

Can this laptop just not do what I’m asking?
Have I missed something obvious?

I’m not sure if it’s something they’ve added since, but my macbook doesn’t broadcast a wireless signal for sharing like a router would. You can set it up for sharing, but that would just mean you’d be able to connect to the laptop if you were already on the network.

I think you’d just need to plug your wii in directly with one of the their ethernet adapters unfortunately, or of course find a wireless router.

Sorry.

hopefully jp has magic

That should really do it. Turn off password protection. The range is very short unless you are in a apartment. Nobody should see or be be able to connect unless they are close. My imac only sends the signal about 50 feet.

@funkdaddy – My 4 your old iMac will work as a wireless router if it is connected to Ethernet. It is actually really nifty.

@world_hello – awesome, just tried it with mine but can’t get it to actually connect, I’ve seen the option but always figured it was something in the OS that would work with either additional equipment or newer models.

Will it work Mac->Windows? Can’t get mine to play nice.

@asmonet – will you let us know if you figure it out?

@funkdaddy – I have only used it to connect to iPod Touches and a iPad. But it should work fine with Windows.

Sadly, it never started working. Even though everything said it should.
But it was a fine Christmas anyway. Merry Christmas, lovelies – thanks for the help.
