What is the average time you or your family woke on Christmas morning to open presents?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) December 24th, 2010

What is the average time you or your family wakes up on Christmas morning? Do the 1st person wakes up the rest? Is the gifts and tree area off limit until everyone is awake of do the 1st ones up go at their gifts even if the sleepyheads are not there yet? Do you set an alarm or do daybreak dictate gift opening time?

My two young ones usually get up first, about 8 am., while it’s still dark outside, then my wife. I’m always the last to get up, around 10–11 am.

7 or 7:30, although now that the kids are older it will be after 7:30 tomorrow. But no one near the tree until every one is up!

I always had this image of kids waking up at like 6am on Christmas morning and jumping on the parents so they could open presents. I hope the movies haven’t misled me!

When I was a child, my brother and I would get up at 6! We were so excited!
I get up at 5am every day now, so Christmas I will sleep in till 6, and be the first one up.
My kids were never early risers, even on Christmas. I assume I will have to wake them tomorrow to get to my daughters house at 9am.

My grandkids don’t even go to bed until around 3 am, so they sleep until 1 or 2 the next day. Their parents are coming over around 3 pm which is when we will open presents.

I’m a kid speaking here and I just stay up all night with my parents watching movies and such and we open em up at midnight.

But it wasnt always like that, we used to do what @filmfann did with waking up at around 9am and waiting for everyone to wake up and then we open.

Murry X-mas folks!

In our family, we have to wake up on our own accord (so everyone is well-rested) and we must eat breakfast prior to opening gifts. I am usually the last person to wake up between 7:00 and 8:30 AM (but when I was a kid, I’d be the second up.)

There’s no rush tomorrow morning this year. I’ll be sleeping in.

Nobody opens presents until everyone is up. My daughter’s always last. Today she was up at 9am.

When I was a kid, my siblings and I would wake up at around 7, and the rule was that we could open our stockings. But other presents required that everyone be up and present.

We actually open our presents the night before!

My mother was born and raised in Germany, so she grew up with the tradition of opening them Christmas Eve after mass and the extended family Christmas dinner- and coming home directly after to pry open presents!

When I was growing up, my brothers and I were usually up around 7 a.m. or so. We didn’t usually wake up my parents but instead waited for them to rise on their own. Sometimes we were a bit noisy, though, and “helped” them get up earlier. We always waited for everyone to get up and gather by the tree before the present opening free-for-all went into full swing. I don’t have any children of my own so if I’m not working on Christmas day, I just get up whenever I’m rested and start my day then.

We open gifts on Christmas eve. We would go to 5 pm Mass, then out to dinner, then home to open gifts. We no longer to to Mass, eat at home on Christmas eve, but still open gifts afterwards.

Damn it, I was woken up at three thirty this morning. Somehow, everyone else was up, and my whining did nothing to convince them to let me sleep in. I felt better after coffee, though.

My son usually is up by 8am and wakes us up. He knows he isn’t allowed near the tree without us on Christmas morning. This year, he slept until 9:30am when I woke him up.

I awoke at 7, but decided to lie in bed until the kids woke up. About 20 minutes later, I needed to use the bathroom, and heard some rustling out in the hall. A couple minutes later, after I had crawled back in to bed, the kids climbed in with me. we cuddled for about ten minutes, then got up about 7:40 .

Our kids usually wake up between 6:00 and 6:30 on Christmas morning. This year the youngest was up first at 6:00 and probably would have gone back to sleep for a while if my husband hadn’t gotten up to start the coffee and make a lot of noise to get the other kids up. He was as impatient as they are!

The kids come into our room first on Christmas morning. We go out to the living room to turn on lights and cameras, then call them to come out when we’re ready. They walk out holding hands so they all get to the living room at the same time without the oldest leaving the youngest behind. I’m always amazed at how well they do this every year, knowing they are bursting with excitement! They get to check out what Santa brought, take everything out of their stockings, and play with those things until my husband and I are mostly awake and have coffee in our hands. Then we hand out gifts from family for them to unwrap in a semi-organized way.

6:30 a.m. The kids didn’t want to open gifts on Christmas Eve and agreed they’d wake up extra early Christmas morning instead even though we had a house of 7 people to get ready for a 9 a.m. breakfast across town.
