Why is my laptop's sound not working?

I have an inspiron mini laptop. The sound isn’t working for some reason. I have the volume up and I played in the master volume control and came up with nothing. The kids had the laptop and I think they might’ve been messing around with the pre-installed webcam. Could they have done anything to mess it up or am I just not seeing the obvious?
