Do you think the NFL should have cancelled Sunday night's game?

Asked by marinelife (62485points) December 27th, 2010

The Eagles-Vikings game was postponed by the NFL to Tuesday, because of the forecast for snow in Philadelphia.

Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell was virulently opposed to the cancellation as you can hear here, where he called Americans “wusses.”

What do you think? Should the game have been canceled? Or was the opportunity for a classic NFL match-up lost?

Yes, it should have. Conditions weren’t just bad, they were dangerous. The game was rescheduled for Tuesday. They will still play, the players will just have to stay in Philly an extra two days.

I watched news about how dangerous driving was New England way. I assume people would have to get home after the game.

it wasn’t that bad, they should have played. so many people have these huge SUVs with 4 WD, and they get scared to drive with a few inches of snow!

@zenvelo I am more scared of the people that have the big SUVs and 4WDs that think they are impervious to weather conditions because they have an SUV or 4WD.

I think the NFL was correct to be cautious and postpone the game. Philly is an outdoor stadium. The crowd could have been stuck there without adequate shelter if they had decided to play and conditions were as bad, or worse than predicted.

If they would have been playing inside a dome, they may have made a different determination about playing the game.

They should have played the game. It snows a lot and people stay home if they can’t handle it. There’s plenty of public transportation in Philly that works quite well, even in a snow storm. It runs underground. How can it not be working?

The players can play in the weather and it would have been great to see them play in that weather. It would have been a fantastic game.

Now the teams will have to play their next game on a very short week. It could be a very crucial game next week, as far as seedings are concerned. If the Eagles win this week but lose to Dallas next week, we’ll never know if the short week made the difference.

Tuesday night football? Give me a fucking break!

Oh, I hate they did, but for public safety, probably the correct call.

Ok, I agree a lot with @wundayatta. However, the forecast was calling for a severe blizzard and predicted 18 inches of snow link. (more objective POV on the story)

Based on that prediction, I think it was a good decision. However since the result was not what was expected it may appear like a bad idea.

As a huge football fan, this interrupted my life in more than one way (see Fantasy Football) :). Based on the 18 inches of snow predicted, I would have to say a good call.

The Eagles are machines right now anyway. I doubt a short week will stop them from pounding the Boys on Sunday.

I don’t follow handegg, but hell yes.
I live in NYC and I was out on Sunday night for a concert. It was FUBAR and getting back home was hell. The buses weren’t running and my sister’s car wasn’t working, so I couldn’t get any rides. I had to walk 2 miles from the subway station to my house and it sucked ass. Therefore, I understand NFL’s decision. No concert, sporting event, porno convention, or donkey show is worth risking your life over and don’t confuse stupidity with bravery.
Also, it’s just a fucking game.

18 inches is a helluva lot of snow! Certainly more than a “few inches.”! Good call.
