Where is a good place to find web programmers and developers for my Internet Startup?

Asked by DrewJ (436points) December 28th, 2010

I have an internet start-up company that is a little ways along. It is a web application with a social networking community built around it. The “prototype” is built. Meaning: I had a developer build the website for me but it is not quite a finished project. Long story short, I am the CEO, I have my CFO and Marketing Guy in place. What I really need and am having the hardest time finding is my Technical Director. Not sure if that’s what you would call him, but he is the guy that knows programming and can fix problems with the website if problems come up. The only thing stopping me from launching my site and going any further is having a reliable web programmer that I can offer a share of the company to who will maintain the site and keep it in working order.

The guy who built the prototype is not going to work out. For reasons too long to explain…

I need need help finding someone reliable. Besides craigslist are there any resources online someone can enlighten me to? Any forums or developer/programmer communities? I’ve tried craigslist, mashable jobs, college campuses.

Keep in mind, as an internet start-up I can not pay a salary yet, but I can offer a percentage of the company.

Also, I need something much more permanent than elancer.com, rentacoder.com or sites like those.

What is your architecture? If it’s rails you could try over at odesk. Outside of that.. if you think you have a good thing, then take your prototype and try and get some venture capital because thats really the only way to trade part of your company of money.

Just my 2 cents.

I will be honest here. Anyone that works for shares in some facebook clone is stupid. And anyone that can help is smart enough to know this.

You need to pay or accept a stupid kid to help. Right now it is really easy to find a paying job writing code.

http://jobs.37signals.com is a decent job board that may attract devs looking for a job at a startup

You could also try listing your company at http://www.startupshiring.com

Last but not least I’d recommend trying linkedin.com

Thanks everyone for your help. Except you Not_the_CIA, your answer was awful. The website is not a facebook clone and there really is no really for you to have assumed so.

@ETpro I’m looking for a programmer that can join our startup team for a share of the company. Of course, I’d show them the prototype so they can decide if it is a product they want to get behind. Not contractors really, I can’t go through the process of quoting a job and paying for time worked every time a problem comes up with the site. If interested, send me a message.

It doesn’t sound like you need a full time person. Just someone that can fix things when they break and if there is not a lot of usage yet, some with a job may be willing toi take a chance. I suggest Linkedin, since there are a lot of experienced people there that can help or help suggest other people.

@DrewJ Have you committed to a platform and development application framework? If you are locked in there, then the candidates become seriously limited. @Jaxk might well be right, and that would mean that someone could work from their own location and get it up and running for you. Once it starts producing a revenue stream, you can look for a full time IT guy to keep it online and working, and add enhancements as needed. That could either be your original coder, or someone who is not an owner but an at-will employee.

I don’t think this is a good fit for guru.com or elance.com or that type of contractor shopping service.
