Anyone out there work for the postal service?

Asked by Crossroadsgrl (925points) December 29th, 2010 from iPhone

Two questions:
What’s it like to do this full time?
That’s the real question

Also: what really happens to those letters we didn’t stamp AND put no return address on. This was a very real issue for me and I chased a card down for 2 full days, unable to track it. How much effort is put into collecting the postage from the recipient versus putting it in ” dead mail ”. Truly asking.

I worked a rural route about 6 years ago helping a friend that had won the bid on the sub-contract which is common in rural areas.

I loved my route and because of the secluded mountain area I came to know many residents and enjoyed lots of gifts of fresh produce, eggs and other fun stuff left in the mailboxes.

The down side was heavy mail volume, it could take 2–3 hours every morning casing the mail and Tuesdays were hell with all the 2nd class mail.

Holidays were very heavy and delivering parcels that would not fit into the lock boxes at the mailbox units took up many extra hours.

The days after a holiday were also very heavy.

Being a sub-contractor I was also responsible for my scanner and if it was lost or broken you paid $500 out of pocket for it’s replacement. I don’t know how the USPS handles this with their regular employees.

Many a time I’d get miles from my last delivery only to remember I left the scanner at the last MBU. ;-/

I gained a new appriciation of the postal service and I can still, to this day remember most of my route.

‘Zanini’ 1271 Lawrence road, watch out for the dog!
‘Clayton’ 3400 Brockman Mill rd. watch out for the mean pig! lol
‘Lucas’ 1400 Eden Lane, pervey old man, go fast! ..before he sees you and comes out to flirt. hahaha

I have two uncles that work for the Post Office. They both say it’s a good job, as long as you can take a lot of shit from the higher-ups, etc.

Yeah! where’s astrochuck?

If you decide to take a job at the post office, please, please, please check the address before placing it in the mailbox! For 2 months I received everyone in my neighborhoods mail but my own. It was very annoying!
