Have any of you ladies had a hair perm start uncurling the very next day?

Asked by ZEPHYRA (21750points) December 30th, 2010

I have long, straight and “heavy” hair which obviously does not take to perming, but is it possible for the perm to “come out” on the second day? What a disappointment!

No,but I did manage to give myself a bald spot that was 1’ x 2” right in the front.It was the widest part I had ever seen and I had to do a comb-over for awhile.I was lookin’ good! XD

Some people’s hair seems to be resistant. I have very fine hair and I had the same thing happen, so it may be more than just the thickness.

@lucillelucillelucille That’s hot! ;)

You didn’t wash it did you? That will make a perm come out. I think you should call the hairdresser and talk to her/him about it. I know perms cost a lot of money, so I would see if they can reimburse you or re-perm when your hair is healthier. This is all assuming you went to a hairdresser and didn’t use a home perm.

@chyna no it was not a home perm! And yes, it cost quite a package!

I had the opposite experience, only once, however. Having thick, wavy and wild hair, I got it straightened in the days when I was still naive, silly and ungrateful.

On the walk home from the beauty salon, my hair started to wave and curl again.

Now I am thrilled for the dense and shaggy main. I will never go bald.

I second @chyna. Definitely call the stylist. They should have given proper care instructions. If they did and if you didn’t do anything wrong, they need to make it right either by reimbusement, re-perming or relaxing (free of charge).

Did you get it wet by chance? You’re not supposed to let your hair get wet for at least 24 hours after the perm.

I used to have really straight hair, then I got it permed twice in the 2nd grade and ever since then it’s grown out curly. I used a flatiron on it for 2 months, about 4 years ago, and then it wouldn’t curl anymore. I had to get it re-permed. Now it stays curly again. I have weird hair.

Yes.. I had a few perms when I was 11–14 because for whatever reason, I felt they were cool and grown-up. I have weird hair, too. It’s wavy, but really fine. Each time I got a perm, I’d leave and things would be good, but then parts of my hair, like on top where it was very noticeable, would completely uncurl and go straight. It looked really weird and it didn’t take me long to realize that a perm wouldn’t take the way it was supposed to, with my hair.

I guess that was a blessing in disguise, looking back at the photos of me with permed hair.
