When and why is a question shut down with a note of "Discussion is Closed."?

Asked by rooeytoo (26981points) January 3rd, 2011

I just noticed a question that I was following had that notation at the end. There was no flame baiting or attacks. It seemed a good question and the responses were insightful. I don’t remember seeing such an abrupt end to a peaceful question before. Is this a new thing?

When a question gets pushed back to editing—for any reason (whether it’s for typo correction, or that it’s being outright rejected)—members who go to the question will encounter that.

@Sarcasm – thanks for the response. I am not sure though if the question in question was sent back for editing. If that happens doesn’t the whole thing disappear? In this instance the question and all of the answers (none were moderated) still stands in its entirety but it has the discussion closed notation at the end???

I think it stands, as is, with the “discussion closed” notation until the OP chooses to discard it. At that point it vanishes into the ether. (but earned lurve remains for all respondants)

Is that right? I’ve only had it happen once to me, but that was the way it went.

@Blueroses -@Sarcasm just showed me the error of my ways. The question was indeed sent back for editing, I didn’t notice the little banner at the top initially. I mistakenly thought that when a question needed editing, the whole thing disappeared. Oh my, I have only been here since March 2008, I can’t be expected to learn it all overnight, heheheheh! Silly me.

They used to disappear entirely. This way is relatively new, so you don’t lose the answer you wrote. :)

Well…if the question was getting pub, members were enjoying it…doesn’t it seem like that should over ride editing??

What was the question @rooeytoo? Was it by chance the one that said say “Yay or ‘neigh’” in it? LOL!

Nope was a serious question, I will hunt for it and let you know.

@augustlan – thank you for that, I thought perhaps I was getting a little dinghy, heheheh!

@Dutchess_III – “Who is on top during anal? Obama or Biden?” Will get tons of answers. That doesn’t make it a good question. Helping a person is the goal.. or at least it was.
