What is the purpose of the armbands on many college football players?

watching college and some pro football games, many players have bands above the elbow and some also have them below shoulder at top of bicep. Why?

Is it a black band? Many footballers wear black armbands when they play in remembrance of somebody who has died recently.

I don’t know why they would wear it so high up but I can think of a few possibe reasons:

Simple comfort
To hold something
To make them more aware of that body part

But my primary guess would be to use it to wipe sweat from the brow.
