Anybody have experience taking on Powderpost Beetle infestations?

Asked by Cruiser (40449points) January 12th, 2011

I am looking at buying an 18 yr old home and the house inspector found an active Powderspost beetle infestation apparently in the exterior walls of the home. The exterminator dude says “no problemo” to get rid of them but everything I am reading on the web says it is a major uphill battle. Any Jelly help out there would be greatly appreciated.

@Cruiser Might be a major red flag. I came across some stuff that said they’re rarely found in wood older than 5 years old because it’s too dry and they need some moisture in the wood. If an 18 year old house has them in the siding it could be a sign of leakage, vapor issues, etc. No personal experience but that made me wonder.

@Adirondackwannabe I am reading the same things. I have a lot of “experts” involved on this and there appears to be a logical explanation for this and that it is not as bad as it appears to be.

Seems like they’re easy to control once the underlying problem is addressed. Good luck
