The stuff at makesift memorials what eventually becomes of it?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) January 13th, 2011

The tributes and items at makeshift memorials be it for a celebrity, well-liked student, etc. what eventually happens to all the balloons, candles, flowers, cards, pictures, placards, stuffed animals, etc., especially if it spontaneously erupts in or on a highly public place? Do those required to maintain the grounds handles it or some other organization like the Red Cross maybe?

From what I understand, after a period of time, it is disposed of or the family may opt to do something with it.

In our area, they are cleared out by the public works department (trash man).

Soft toys for charity and landfill scores the rest eh?

In our area there was an accident involving two teenagers killed on private property. The kids from school started bringing memorial goods almost immediately. The neighbors tolerated it out of respect for a while but after a few rains it turned into a mess. They waited 30 days and had it removed. (I think a local disposal company did it at no charge.) Kids then put up a post (monument) in the right of way which was inadvertently ripped down by the snowplow soon after.
Stuffed animals turn to mush and sadness in the wet, muddy soil.

It depends. At the VIetnam Wall, a non-profit group takes them in. For Princess Diana, her family takes them in.

All the roadside memorials here are eventually removed by CalTrans.

I think those memorials are just nuts. Donate that money!! And stuffed animals for grownups?

@YARNLADY Isn’t that an aweful lot of useful candles and such going to waste? Depending on the size of the memorial that could be a lot of stuff wasted to a landfill.

@Arbornaut Soft toys for charity Wouldn’t that be kind of creepy to have a child maybe get a stuffed toy left for another dead child?

@faye It’s minuscule compared to the major neighborhood trash pick up days they have in my area three times a year. You can drive by block after block of perfectly usable items that are stacked up for the trash truck to haul away.
