Is there any way to put my computer on hold like I do with my mp3?

Asked by Zyx (4170points) January 14th, 2011

In this instance I spilled a drink on my keyboard and wanted to clean it without spending a lot of time securing my PC.

Something like an on/off button on the taskbar would be nice.

To be clear, this “button” would disable input until you pressed in a second time for example.

“Sleep” command

If it’s a Windows PC, there should be the option in the Start menu, to put it in ‘sleep’ mode for as long as you like. Though actually, why not just unplug the keyboard? It won’t affect the PC and you can still use the mouse. The keyboard is not integral to the function of the machine, only to your use of it. Simples.

GA @auntydeb——Works for desktops anyway.

Fn + Esc puts mine in “Stand by”. Touch the switch near base of the display to restart it

All of those do a lot more than just block input, and my keyboard is wireless.

The ‘Windows’ key (between the left hand Ctrl and Alt keys or to the right of the right hand Alt key) and “L” will put your PC into Locked mode if you use that.

Sleep might wake up when you press a key, depending on the settings.

I think @CyanoticWasp‘s Lock works best. Not sure what happens if you don’t have a password set, though.

Are you trying to stop the input from the keyboard wile you clean it?
Or
Stop all input wile you are away from it? you don’t want anyone to mess with it

go into the control panel and look for the power settings. You can tweak the configuration on what to do based on what actions.
As an example, you can shutdown or hybernate, sleep, etc off of keystroke combination or closing laptop screen, to any combination.
