When was the last time you argued in public & what does it take to initiate this response in you?

Asked by ucme (50047points) January 15th, 2011

I think I can safely say i’ve never done this. I mean, i’ve certainly come close on a number of occasions to having a public spat, but never actually had one. See, if the person involved were someone I knew, a friend or a family member, i’d want to take it indoors or at least away from the eyes & ears of those around at the time. I’d be way too embarrassed & self conscious. Same if a stranger for whatever reason wanted to “kick off” with me. Maybe a queue jumper or some antagonistic individual I had the misfortune to bump into. How about you?

It has been more than 10 years. I abhor public scenes (leftover from childhood).

About 15yrs, I’m in no hurry to deal with that kind of BS again.

I get pissed when playing sports sometimes, and start yelling at the opponent. Does that count? In fact, @ucme , it was playing soccer (sorry, a football match) recently. I was running after the ball with an opponent, and my toe barely clipped the other guy’s heel, causing him to stumble maybe a half-step. I immediately apologized, but he decided to call me a “fucking retard.” For some reason, that caused me to snap and turn on the Manson lamps and get in his face. He looked so freaked out I immediately relaxed.

Another recent one was during a pick up flag football game. Just a chill game, no trophy on the line, just good time. Some little prick started loudly bitching about the quality of the passing of the pickup game QBs, and I started yelling at him to leave or shut his mouth.

Am I nuts?

@cockswain Nah of course you’re not bud….long time no see…...speak by the way! It’s an established & mutually understood arrangement when on the sports field that, basically anything goes. I’ve had tons of girly slapping & name calling going down when playing football or rugby. Actually when it comes to rugby my tactic is to call them a big gormless halfwitted giant & then run like a bitch….it’s the only way to go :¬)

Thanks bud. Indoor soccer can get real chippy for some reason. I’ve seen men yank women to the turf, only to see the 120lb woman get right in the guy’s face. A few months ago, a skinny guy on our team was getting harassed by a tough woman on the other team, and he finally pushed her a little bit. She actually punched him in the face. Not slapped, punched, like a boxer. I love it.

grr to you too !
haha, well coincedently I was out shopping with a friend( she’s not very close) and she started a little fight with the cashier…. wince. I sort of got flushed and told her to forget it, playing the peacemaker I suppose.
anyway i personally never have been in a fight or arguement in public

Thanks peeps! I’m pleased to hear you too find the idea abhorrent, or at least undesirable. I see a lot of people ranting at each other in a public place & I just think, what are you doing? It’s like a train wreck, I can’t wait to get out of earshot :¬)

I very quietly addressed an issue with my husband over lunch once, about 8 years ago. He blew up instantly and started yelling. It was so embarrassing, I just walked out.

Do you think arguing in public is somehow problematic? I don’t remember the last time I argued in public but I suppose when it matters more than the public. What do random strangers mean to me when something important must be said to whomever I’m arguing with?

DrasticDreamer's avatar

The last time I argued in public is when someone was talking down to me, making me seem like an incompetent five-year-old, and doing so in front of a lot of people. I will not tolerate that kind of treatment, and I will, no matter what, always stick up for myself when something like that happens – regardless of where I am and who can see or hear. I don’t freak out, but I absolutely stand up for myself.

Some people don’t seem to realize how inappropriate it is to argue and yell in public….this includes yelling into your cell phone at someone.

I must have but can’t remember. It seems anathema to me.
