Have you ever had the feeling of being paralyzed?

Asked by Meego (4697points) January 15th, 2011 from iPhone

I am trying to figure out if maybe there is another reason other than a health issue, but anyone else ever feel their body just go like I was at my PC desk and I just all of a sudden went into a limp position, I could hear everything going on around me but I could not connect my brain to my body to make a movement. I had this happen once before while I was laying in bed one time. I had someone tell me that it could be PTSD, and while the body is under stress has something to do with the fight, flight or fear coping mechanism? I’m just wondering has anyone else ever had this “symptom?”. I should also state when this happened my life was more stressful than normal. I am by no means using this as medical advice I have an appointment with my doctor in 6 weeks.

I experience this a lot in between sleep and being awake. The at the desk thing I have never experienced. Were you falling asleep at the desk? I have learned that I can intensify my breathing and breath my way out of it. Never really knew if this was some sort of dream state or trance. Hate when it happens. I don’t sleep on my back to avoid this.

I have had it when waking up from a dream yes, and also I have been paralyzed with fear. That is such a helpless feeling.

It’s never happened to me but I’ve also never heard of that sort of thing being a symptom of PTSD. If you’ve been diagnosed with PTSD then that would also be something to talk to the doctor about if the diagnosis was made by another physician. But you are doing the right thing to make sure you talk to you doc about the issue. It seems to be somewhat common and probably nothing to worry about but it never hurts to be sure.

Does this sound like what you are experiencing?

If so, I think you had better move up your doctor’s appointment in case it is virally induced.

@marinelife No I do not think that is what I have. The paralysis I’m talking about only lasted about 2 minutes with no other symptoms.
@Season of Fall I was awake, but I have heard of that kind of paralysis before.
I’m leaning a little closer towards @wilma ‘s answer about paralyzed with fear. It hasn’t happened since and I can move fine.

You could be suffering from a small seizure. Epileptic seizures aren’t always like movies portray. Mild form of it can just be paralizing or simply give you migraines or black outs. If it only happend once than I wouldn’t be too concerned but more than once is a problem.
It happened to me once where I suddenly couldn’t move after waking up. Only from the neck up. I figured I must’ve somehow pinched a nerve or maybe my body was still in sleep mode.

I’ve experienced this on a couple occassions, it usually happens just as I’m waking up. It is one of the most helpless feelings I’ve ever had

As @Pandora mentioned, it sounded like a small seizure. There aer diferent grades and severities of seizures, but the fact that you were cognitive of it but could not do anything and it lasted 2 minutes seem that way. You are so right in getting it checked out and the nature of the CNS area of concern it would be helpful if they did a CT scan to rule out things. Good luck. Prayers with you.
