Do you have a lot of plants (of the legal variety) in your home? Do you have an issue with indoor plant overkill?

Asked by Jude (32198points) January 17th, 2011

I could easily get there (indoor plant overkill). Meaning, I keep on getting/wanting more. I really do think that indoor plants add a lot to a home. :) How much is too much?

Plant freak.

My mom keeps a ton of houseplants. Watering the plants was one of my chores as a kid, and it took close to an hour to check every room for plants, refill the watering can, check every room for what I’d missed…

I only have one plant that hangs in my window, because my cats like to eat plants. This one is a Swedish Ivy that belonged to my Nana who passed away 5 years ago.

I have a few plants.Come early spring though,I have 100’s of seedlings sprouting indoors for my veggie and flower garden.:)

I had a serious heart-to-heart talk with myself this September and tossed the woody, or scraggly or root-bound or ugly plants.

It is best, I find, to keep only the keepers.
See here
The bulbs for the orange amaryllis were discovered on the dirt floor of the basement of my great-grandfather’s little farmhouse in Queens, probably in the 1940’s. They were little, dried-up, brown shriveled things.

And like lucille^3, I start lots of flowers and veggies from seed in spring.

Beautiful, Gail (and, lovely home, as well).

@Jude; Thank you. For me, as I age, less is more (and easier to take care of).

The amaryllis has a moderately severe case of scale. Every day I wipe the front and back of 10 leaves with a cotton ball dipped in alcohol. Major pain, but at least there is only one infected plant.

I have in the past…my house looked like a jungle inside in the winter, and a jungle outside in the summer. The smaller ones seemed to have started disappearing about the time the kids moved out! And…like @gailcalled I culled out the ugly woody ones (but I couldn’t just throw them away…I had to “forget” to bring them in in the winter….) But…I’m slowly getting more. I can’t seem to help it. Best of all…I FINALLY LEARNED HOW TO KEEP A BOSTON FERN ALIVE! I’ve tried keeping Boston Ferns since the 80’s and I just kilt ‘em daid, everytime. But not this one. I’m so proud of myself.

Wow @gailcalled…what a wonderful window!!! I want that window!!

@Dutchess_III: Here’s the rest of the room.

Here’s the dining room.
Here’s the balcony off my bedroom

Sorry that Milo is hogging the foreground. The house is mainly glass and light. It is a dream house, in spite of being chilly and expensive to heat in the winter. I wear lots of clothes and keep the thermostat low.

Oh. Wow. Wow….it’s a plant house! I really WANT it. Don’t be surprised if you wake up one morning and all your windows are gone! I’d have so many freaking plants….

The subject of too many plants is just one point of contention in this fascinatingly entertaining horror of a web page. Search for the word “plant” or just go to the phrase “Vietnam of plants.”

I have no recollection of how I stumbled upon this site some years ago, but your question reminded me of it, and it was on the first page of hits when I googled crazy german girlfriend plants.

@Jeruba: Ach, du lieber! You expect me to read that? I gave up when my eyes started to cross.

I love plants. As long as you have time and energy to care for them properly and water them and make sure they don’t get scraggly or un-healthy, I think it’s fine. Just make sure that you aren’t letting their soil and water ooze out over the pots and get all over your counters or shelves (especially ones made of wood). We’ve had a couple of plants that had a bit of a leakage problem, watch out for that. And if you ever have to go out of town, make an extensive list of how to care for each one of them properly for your house sitter. Don’t leave it to chance.

I have two plants blooming right now. I definitely have too many, but I love them.

My Mom had her entire house filled with growing plants. I brought many of them home with me when I settled her estate, but they all eventually died. I love live plants, but they don’t love me.

I have plants and more plants and my kids gave me an orchid for xmas and a friend is bringing me hoya clppings. I grew a beautiful salmon geranium from seed last spring and it’s blooming again. I’ll plant my tomatoes soon, and callas. My 2 xmas amaryllis are ready to bloom. Can never have too many!

I have quite the indoor garden complete with a nice herb garden. I do think you can or could reach an overkill point as they do take a lot of care.

I have a peace lily and money plant in my living room and a peace lily in my kitchen. I love them.

Not a lot but I wish I had bunches. My mother who lives with us is an excellent green thumb whereas I have had success with only nursing a scraggly vine leaf plant with a few leaves and bald stalk… for years. The man says he’s good so we’re going to try and introduce some indoor trees for him to nurture. I’d love a wall of hanging greens from our living room into the dining room, like an indoor grotto.

I have large plants..arubber plant, a hoya and a couple of ficus trees. I’ve had them from 15 to 30 years. They’re well over 6’ each. They take up a good portion of where ever I put them. I need a dolly to get them in and out. We need a new house!

@Dutchess_III: Was it Val123 who send me a photo of your stove sitting on a back porch? Or am I dreaming? Were you renovating?

edit: “sent”

Yes @gailcalled! When we suddenly decided to put our house up for sale, but we had a LOT of work to do, especially on the floors! There was an entire post about it…
