Just had ankle surgery, been urinating alot, how long will this last?

Asked by Moegitto (2310points) January 19th, 2011

As the topic say’s, I just had right ankle and I’ve been going to pee like crazy. I’m already a diabetic and my blood sugar checks good. So what’s wrong?

PS: The doctor/nurse said something about this happening and said if I DON’T pee there was something wrong.

The only thing that pops into my head is there any new medications you were prescribed after the surgery? Either way consult with the doc again to get some peace of mind. Get better soon!

Because the surgery site is a trauma to your ankle, fluids are going to want to collect there. The fact that you’re peeing like a racehorse means that your circulation is working correctly, and you are flushing out that area. If you didn’t pee your ankle would swell, placing pressure on the site and the cast, and cutting off circulation to your foot.

I’m not a doctor. But maybe urination Is more difficult now so you are noticing it more. But you should keep asking people who know what they are talking about more. You are paying good money so you deserve to not be blown off.

@omph Oh urination DEFINITELY isn’t difficult, lol.
@BarnacleBill I kinda HOPED that was what I pieced together when I woke up all drugged up. I love when you can’t even tell if your moving your right ear or your big toe and they try to tell you something so important.
@Cruiser I was reading my papers on my medicines and the Celebrex they gave says it would change my urination habits, lol

I guess being a diabetic having a working circulation would be a good thing? hmmm…

Did you have general anesthesia? if so, you would have gotten lots of IV fluid drips to flush out the anesthesia that remains in your system.

If you’re on pain meds – narcotics, like vicodin – they have an anticholinergic effect. This weakens the contraction of your bladder, so you don’t pee as much out as usual. That means you fill up quicker, and you have to go more often.

I’ve had ankle surgery myself and I remember peeing like nobody’s business. I’m not sure why that is. Part of it is that you are ingesting a lot more fluids than normal.

Oh, and what @IchtheosaurusRex said. :)

@gailcalled yeah, I had general anesthesia. That stuff knocked me out harder than a bag of ice on a baby

You probably are peeing out the remnants of the anesthesia in your system. That is a good thing.
