Will using a blindfold make me dependent on it?

Asked by jabag11 (676points) January 20th, 2011

I use a blindfold every morning, not at night, I don’t need it at night as the room is pitch dark. every night I wake up at least twice, once around 2 am, and then another around 5am, when I wake up at 5 am is when I put on the blind fold since the sun seeps through my blinds.

So my question is, do you think using this blindfold every morning to keep it pitch dark will make me dependent on it? As in, will I eventually always need it to be pitch dark to fall asleep if I keep using it every morning like this?

This is what my mother says, but i don’t know…?

It’s possible. I have a habit of needing noise to fall asleep like the t.v. still on low. I can’t fall asleep without it.

no. it will not. things change as the tide of time turns.

I want to know where you live that you have sunlight at 2AM? Alaska?

But seriously, do I don’t think you will grow dependent on it. You may find some self preferring to be in the dark with or without it.

I doubt it, but why worry? Lots of people use sleep masks, and there’s no reason not to.

You could sleep at night when it is naturally dark and be awake during the day when it is light. Our bodies are naturally attuned to this and it is only the availability of artificial light sources that make this a problem.

You don’t have a dependency. No one can sleep very well in the light. We just aren’t made that way. We all depend on the dark to make it possible to sleep. If you do shift work and have to sleep during the day, then you need to simulate night if you are going to get any rest at all. Of course, that messes you up because you need sunlight for many reasons, not just to see. If you create dark to sleep during the day, you lose out on a lot of important vitamins and other stuff that a doctor could tell you more about.

No, you won’t. Besides a blindfold is a good thing. Sleeping in a fully dark room is better for your sleep habits and your health.

It is certainly a form of conditioning. I would not discount the possibility that you might not be able to sleep without it. Then you would have to condition yourself the other way.

Only if you’re 19 and male.

I grew up with a bedroom in the basement and when I went to college I couldn’t stand the daylight in the dorms. My first apartment I had to have the room darkening shades to get get sleep as I was always up real late. My first house I couldn’t afford curtains and newspaper in the windows wasn’t cool so I made due with the light shears my mom gave me and eventually loved sleeping in the morning sun coming in the room. Once I had kids and with all the disturbances, sleep became a priority again and installed the room darkening shades again.

Perhaps, but why would it matter? Sleeping in total darkness is better for sleep anyway.

I just use one of my many pillows. and I push it off if I don’t want it.
Easier than a blindfold and more comfortable.
