What is the best way to start a blog?

Asked by holli (487points) January 20th, 2011

I think I would like to start a blog but I don’t even know where to start. It seems like some places offer free spaces and other bloggers pay for their space. Also, most have advertisements. Does that fund the blogger or the site they’re hosting on? Where should I start? What should I consider before getting started? And are there any new venues to the blog scene to be aware of?

Yes the advertisements pay for the space / traffic being used by said blog.

Wordpress will not have advertisments if you host it on your own domain but that requires a yearly domain registration and small monthly fee.

Blogger is pretty popular and is free.

You can start an account on WordPress for free. And I don’t see any ads on mine.

Depending upon your motive, make sure to have something worthwhile to say; otherwise social media may be a better outlet.

Go to any free blog support site such as,, or any of the other hundreds of blogging sites, sign up, and start typing.

Wordpress is free, easy to use… and there’s only ads if you choose a template with the modules already installed (you can usually disable those if you know what you’re doing). There’s also a ton of great additions that you can find, and if you decide to go with your own domain and hosting later on, most hosts offer a version of wordpress you can use on your own domain, and migration to a new domain is easy (moving your entire blog from wordpress to your new host on your own domain). Torching Igloos used to be a wordpress blog, and in some ways I kind of wish I had kept it that way :)
