How would you design our paper currancy?

Asked by shockvalue (5800points) April 12th, 2008

The new fives are hideous, the 20’s aren’t much better, Hamilton is orange. Let’s face it, U.S. paper currency is just plain unattractive. What would you put on our money?

I concur. I would start by thinking of examples of currency I like, and I’m into the way Dutch money looks.

Here’s my favorite. I remember seeing these a while ago and loving them. I love who France chose to put on their money, a national hero and author, as well as a great character.

Woah, those are some pretty intense colours.(for the dutch money)
I’ve always really liked Australian coins.

Europeans have always valued design and aesthetics more than Americans; that’s partly reflected in our currency. However, I don’t even know what our new money looks like since I use my debit card for everything. The card is ugly; perhaps banks, not the Fed, should be the ones redesigning.

I would for sure make it different sizes. To help with recognition.

@bri l; that is a wonderful and humane idea, particularly for those with poor or no vision, and so easy to do. This was mentioned earlier on the site, but I can’t find it and so cannot attribute.

Where are those Dutch Fluther members? The Netherlands had some very stylish bank note designs before the euro. Not sure what they look like now. Example, another.

I love the fact that some of the mexican notes are waterproof, and unrippable.

Edit: Ooh! ooh! and then we could make them out of recycled bottles (plastic bottles are more evil than SUVs)!!

@gailcalled-maybe that is where I heard it. it just makes sense

@ delirium – excellent idea

we should also say “in god we trust but not in our schools or with in 50 feet of any public buildings and as long as he separate from our state” I always wondered why that was on there when the government is so opposed to being specific.
not trying to start a religeous brawl here but that is a pretty hypocritical thing have on there given their stance.

oh god, briL, I can’t agree more. I really wish we could just take it off of our money. The founding fathers actually SAID that this was not a Christian country.
(The Treaty of Peace and Friendship states in Article XI that “the government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion.” )

I think its disrespectful to religion to have it on there, and disrespectful to government to have it on there.
