Why would a zippered cardigan have 2 zipper pulls?

Asked by ETpro (34605points) January 21st, 2011

My wife got me a nice warm cardigan sweater of ribbed-knit cotton. The odd thing about it is the zipper has twin pulls, one facing down and one facing up. You cannot pull the down-facing one past the end of the zipper so you must pull the sweater over your head to put in on or take it off, even though unzipping it down till just the waist area is connected does make this easy compared to a pullover style sweater.

Has anyone seen such a zipper arrangement before? Can you tell me what the logic of it is?

I’m not sure about this because you say that you have to take the sweater off over your head. It should be able to open up completely if my hunch is correct. You should try to open up the sweater using both zipper pulls. A double zipper pull usually means that you can open the zipper from either end. That allows you to zip it down as far as you’d like and also to open up the bottom of the zipper to get a different, more relaxed look. It’s kinda like on a suit jacket when you leave the bottom button unbuttoned. It just gives a different look to it. It’s a sartorial statement.

I think that @Earthgirl is right. carefully try to undo it with both pulls all the way down. I have a sweater and also a couple of coats that zip like that. I unzip it from the bottom when I’m in the car and need a little more room around my hips to sit comfortably.

@wilma Hit it on the head, I had several ski parkas that would invert zip to get on a chair lift.

My winter coat is like this – it zips from the bottom up so you can sit comfortably without it bunching up.

I also think @Earthgirl is right – you really should be able to unzip it completely to take it off.

The bottom zipper is good for letting your belly breathe.

@Earthgirl Indeed it is able to open completely. It happened today. It just takes a pretty deliberate tug on the lower pull to get it over the end of its run. Thanks to you and all that confirmed.
