Is there any reason for my right wrist and ankle to feel weak(er than the left)?

Asked by Zyx (4170points) January 24th, 2011

I know there’s probably some scar tissue in my ankle (twisted it every which way when I was a kid) but my wrist should be fine. I guess I’m primarily curious what might have caused these injuries to occur on only one side.

A mini-stroke or TIA ?

I’m not a Dr. but the one sided aspect of this has me thinking in that direction. Hopefully one of the resident medical gurus on Fluther will chime in with something more definitive.

If it were me, I’d probably place a call to the local ER or my Doc’s office as soon as they open to get their opinion on whether I should come in to get checled out But that’s just me. I’ve heard so many warnings of how important timely intervention is when dealing with stroke so, for myself, I’d rather err on the side of caution.

BTW. TIA means Transient Ischemic Attack. Fairly easy to ignore when it shouldn’t be.

This could easily be the sympton of a serious problem. You don’t say how long you’ve had this weakness, but if it’s been more than a month I would pay my physician a visit soon. It’s far better to find out that it was a false alarm than it would be to ignore serious symptoms.

If you mean they have always been generally weaker, that is not uncommon, especially in your non-writing hand. My entire left side is weaker wrist, hand, leg, foot. My right is whatI use to write, kick, etc, so I use those muscles more. Exercise a muscle makes it stronger. If you work at strengthening your right side it should work.

None of this seems relevant. If it absolutely needs mentioning: it’s been this way for years and years now, and I write with right.

@Zyx Are you less coordinated on that side? Less dexterity? Have you tried to strengthen with weights and exercises?
