I believe that I'm having a migraine but I'm having new symptoms. Any ideas?

Asked by josrific (2575points) February 1st, 2011

I’m absolutely miserable right now. I’ve got a migraine but I’m not sure about something. Normally my migraines start in one spot then within hours spread to the rest of both sides of my head. This migraine started at the same spot (base of the skull on the right side) but migrated up the right side of my skull into my eye. Light is intolerable in that eye and I’m very nauseous yet hungry.

Have any of you had a migraine spread through only one side of your head then settle in one spot, like the eye? Never had this one happen before. What are your thoughts?

Is it possible that you have had a small stroke?

Here are the symptoms of a stroke:
Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden, severe headache with no known cause

If you have any of these symptoms or if you start to feel worse, especially if you are having speech or vision problems, please don’t wait and call 911.

I don’t believe that I’ve had a stroke because I haven’t had any of those symptoms. But that was a thought that I had.

Thank you for the article global nomad. It sounds like that is what I might be experiencing.

Excedrin Migraine and benadryl together can beat a migraine once it starts.

My daughter has had good luck warding off cluster migraines with Maxalt. You take one when you feel a migraine starting, and then a second dose two hours later. It seems to stop the cluster migraine from starting. It doesn’t help if you don’t catch it right at the start of the migraine symptoms, and it doesn’t help people with a regular or sinus headhache. It seems if she can catch a cluster migraine from starting, then she continually has fewer, until she misses, and one actually starts.

@Kardamom wanted me to weigh in here. Unfortunately, this is another of those things that is impossible to diagnose over the interwebs. If it’s a new type of headache, you should be seen by a physician as soon as possible.

I also believe it may be a cluster headache.

All I know is a good friend of mine has bad migraines and they have always gone to her eye. She always says her eye feels like it’s falling out and she vomits. Hope it goes away. ):

@Rarebear Thanks for making a house call (or is it a Fluther call?).

@Kardamom It’s very difficult, and I dare say dangerous, to give all but the most general medical advice over the internet. I could say, “It’s just a migraine or a cluster headache” and she may be reassured, but what if I’m wrong and it’s a subarachnoid hemorrhage? Or vice versa, I could say, “This is dangerous and needs an immediate CT scan” and then she goes and spends a lot of money she doesn’t have?

@Rarebear so true! If people in this country were able to afford and have access to quality healthcare, this whole situation of looking for medical advice online wouldn’t be so rampant. People really do need to go to the doctor, but often they just can’t.

Thankfully I currently have health insurance with Kaiser (but for how long, who knows?) They have a toll free number which their members can call to get advice on whether or not they need to go to the doctor. Too bad there isn’t some type of national hotline that people could call. But even if they did call, if they can’t afford to actually go to the doctor, the point is kind of moot. What are your thoughts on this situation?

josrific's avatar

@Rarebear you say CT scan and it reminded me that I have had multiple MRI’s for my migraines. They found lesions on my brain on both hemispheres. I was then tested for everything! I haven’t had an MRI to see if any new ones have formed in YEARS. I posted about this one because it was so different from all the others I had. But thank you for not scaring me by saying I’m dying in two days.

@Kardamom I have plenty of thoughts on that situation, but they will be modded since it’s off topic.

@Rarebear Maybe you can start another thread and ask people what they think about how to solve the healthcare problem in the U.S. Hopefully you won’t get modded off your own thread.

@dubsrayboo Have your symptoms subsided? I hope you are feeling better.

josrific's avatar

@Rarebear is there a way that you can email me on this site?

Thank you @Kardamom My muscles are tight but I’m doing much better. I finally slept this morning. The sun was beating down on the couch and I just laid their in the warmth (even though it’s 15 degrees outside).

Rarebear's avatar

@dubsrayboo No, just PMs. But as I told @Kardamom I don’t give medical advice unless it’s very general, and then it’s just to show where someone can get medical information.
