How do you install a bathroom in a basement?

Asked by Supacase (14563points) February 6th, 2011

Is it possible to do it without breaking up the concrete?

The pipes for the upstairs bathroom are right above so it seems crazy to go through all of that… except for the fact that I can’t imagine flushing water up.

Only a licensed plumber should be used. This is not a do it yourself job. Get several plumbers in for estimates and see what they say.

I have a carpenter friend who is installing a bathroom in his basement. I haven’t seen it, but he’s told me that he ordered a wall-mount toilet that wouldn’t require him to dig up the concrete. All the piping is done through the walls… Sorry I can’t tell you more, but it can be done.

Does you waste stack go into the floor or do you have overhead sewers?? That will help you decide what you want to do. Either way you are busting concrete. It really is no big deal to do either. If your sewers go down under the basement you will have to connect to it and trench over to where you want your bathroom. Or second option is to service the bathroom with an ejector pit again installed in the floor which will pump waste up into overhead sewers.

Venting is the next big hurdle and a licensed plumber can map this all out for you!

I know you purchase an upflush toilet system. I’m not sure how a shower or tub would work.

The bathroom in my basement was installed in the house before I bought it, and the basement finished, so I can’t see ‘everything’, but… the toilet (and shower) drain into a fully enclosed tank that is recessed into a depression that was cut into the concrete floor. However, there’s a submerged pump with float valve inside that tank that pumps everything up to the main floor drain, which is located just overhead.

In that respect it operates (in principle) a lot like a washing machine, which also “drains upward” because of its pump.

Of course I would never take this on myself. We have several projects we want and/or need to do. I just wanted an idea if it could be done and how involved it would be to see if it would even be worth pursuing.

Thanks, everyone. It sounds like it may be worth more consideration.
