I can't read my email without having to use the horizontal scroll bar to for every line?

Asked by flo (13313points) February 10th, 2011

This is intermittent problem, but I can’t read my email without having to use the horizontal scroll bar to finish reading every line. It is wide instead of the usual long. The whole width of the screen is taken up by the email. So, how do I reverse it? It is Gmail.

Try changing the theme. I never had any problem like this with gmail though. If other stuff is too big you just need to zoom out by using ctrl+ the scroll wheel.

I run a 1366×768 display on my laptop and a 1600×900 on my desktop and have my browser window wide enough to display most pages (including my Gmail) without that bar ever showing up; 800+ pixels wide, or about two-thirds of my laptop screen minimum.

I generally only see that issue on screens with lower resolution and/or when the window isn’t wide enough. That makes me wonder if you’re even wide enough to avoid that issue.I might be wrong, but that is what my gut tells me.

Thank you both.
@XOIIO What does “changing the theme” mean?
By the way nothing else is different or wrong (other sites etc.), just Gmail, when I am reading my email.

Is it every single email? Or just certain ones? If it’s just certain ones, maybe it’s something in the email itself? Like something at the very bottom that is super wide…

@deni It is only this email, not other emails not my Yahoo emails.

Those with images that are wider than your window will do that. Bear in mind that Gmail has wide margins on both sides, so the space in the middle is smaller. Try cramming a 1024-pixel image into a 900-pixel window and you’ll get a horizontal scroll bar.

Can you look me dead in the eye and tell me that there isn’t an image in the header or footer of those e-mails that may be wider than your window?

@flo There are tons of deiiferent themes for gmail, i think you click the google labs icon. A different theme masy reorganize some page elements, but if you are on a small screen it will be affected too.

It is back to normal now. I don’t know what happened to affect just that one email. That is what makes it odd I am thinking. What would affect just one email one in one email client? I did not click something by accident while I was on that email. One day I brushed up against something around the numbers on the keyboard and:
the tabs,
the menu bar,
the address bar
the blue strip above the address bar
all disappeared northward. I am still trying to figure that one.
By the way @XOIIO where is “labs”?

flo's avatar

Okay I got to labs through “Settings” (I “more” earlier, and clicked “even more“I didn’t see labs there) but I don’t know what exactly I should do to reverse the situation, if it happens again.

Not sure, this just sounds like a 1 time glitch.

@XOIIO Yes and I am glad it didn’t last too long.
