Help identify/locate a higher resolution image of a Wolf Kahn Painting?

Asked by gorillapaws (30512points) February 11th, 2011

I’m planning on copying a Wolf Kahn painting, but the only image I could find of it on the web was this low-res image. I was hoping to find a higher-res image so I could get a better idea of the brush strokes. Even just the name of the work might be helpful in figuring out how to find it. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve never really painted before, but my mom is pretty talented and she offered to teach me. I was hoping to use this one as a starting place.

You will most likely not find hi res files of painting on the internet, because the medium lends itself to using lo res files because of the backlighting and pixel size. Working with high res files is only necessary in print, where you need a minimum of 300 dpi for good reproduction. Web images are generally at 72 dpi.

You should be able to purchase a book or calendar showing his work, which would give you a better indication of his brushstrokes in general. That, too, depends on the quality of the photography. You cannot always discern brush strokes from photos.

Have you seen the YouTube videos about him?

Try a Google Images search selecting ‘large’ as the option on the left. That will bring up images such as this one

@YARNLADY yeah, that was the only image I could find, sadly.

@BarnacleBill That video is neat (I’ll have to watch them all when I get the chance). I really love his work, and he comes off as a really cool/unpretentious guy. My mother has many books/calendars/etc. of his work, but I was unable to find the one I linked. I certainly don’t mind buying a book, if I know it has the image in it, but I’m not even sure of the name/year of the work. It doesn’t need to be ridiculously high res, just big enough so that the whole thing isn’t such a blur (I’m really surprised there isn’t an online reference that shows the life’s work of artists the way IMDB.com shows the body of work of actors).

Thanks again for the advice.

@gorillapaws you should start a site like that! You could be the next Mark Zuckerberg!

@gorillapaws Thank you for introducing me to Wolf Kahn. I like his work very much.
He reminds me of Milton Avery.

You may find high resolution images at AskArt but you have to pay for access.
