Has anyone ever purchased an air purifier for the purpose of reducing pet allergens?

Our best friend is pretty allergic to cats… we don’t want him to need Alavert every time he visits, so we want to get an air purifier.
We don’t want to spend a chunk of money that doesn’t work for pet allergens, so do you have any experience/suggestions?
