Can you keep the information you share in Fluther in Fluther?

Asked by josrific (2575points) February 11th, 2011

My daughter just opened a Hotmail account with MSN. She was trying to find me (I’m on Hotmail also) and she did along with many of my Fluther answers and questions. I really didn’t appreciate that that information was being shared to another website without my knowledge.

How can I remove that information from MSN and keep it or Fluther from sharing that information with other websites? I have nothing to hide, but for Heaven’s sake this is ridiculous.

use a different username…

It’s a line… Your question/answer/username -> Fluther -> Google

Also….

You can’t. This isn’t a security breach, this is a public forum. What you share on Fluther is easily findable by a Google search, especially if someone knows your screen name. It’s like hoping that if you scream something in a crowded room, only the person you were talking to will hear it.

What you put in PMs, your password – those are supposed to be kept private, but not your questions or answers.

There is no way to do that except by not participating at all. Everything on Fluther is available to the general public and to search engines.

You may want to ask @Augustlan to change your username to something common.

On your Account page, there is an option for Privacy settings
Just set your comfort level there and it will modify what can be found on your account page.

Answers that you post will still be available in the questions they were posted on, but it won’t be quite as easy to find everything.

Imagine this is Facebook when it comes to posting. Nothing is really private. It’s the Internet, for heaven’s sake.

If you don’t want anyone to know it’s “you” posting a specific quip or question for whatever reason, just create another account. Multiple accounts are excepted by the guidelines for any purpose other than gaming the “Lurve” system.

I’ll be happy to change your username to something people you know won’t recognize. That’s the best way to handle it. If you’d like to do that, just send me an email via the “contact” button up there on the right, and let me know what name you’d like to use.

Gotta figure out a new name first :-)

@dubsrayboo I would say “dog” but it is already taken~ :D

I don’t if this is what the OP is talking about but I think it’s the federated fluther maybe? You, me, all of us are all over the place. It kind of bugs me too but what can I do?

Here, on twitter on Sivanath Sekkappan’s twitter feed, whoever the hell Sivanath Sekkappan is.

Then on www.medicalfaq.net, though I even close to being qualified to provide anything even resembling a “medical faq” there I am!

Here

and

Here

And this stuff:

Here’s here’s what someone said in response to something Dutch or South African, Afrikaans speaking lillycoyote said:

@ Lillycoyote Gemerkte ~

I don’t speak or write Afrikaans or Dutch, but there it is “Gemerkte” I don’t even know what that means.

Dutch, Afrikaans, I don’t know. I’ve only just discovered my foreign self and it takes some getting used to.

And here’s what someone said in response to something the Japanese lillycoyote said:

@ lillycoyoteのことをありがとう!

Certainly don’t speak or write Japanese either. Again, completely clueless as to what
のことをありがとう! means.

@lillycoyote Fluther is on twitter and Sivanath follows Fluther there.

The other sites do what thousands of sites do on the internet. They hijack content to boost ratings by search engines.
It can’t be helped. My blog posts are hijacked all the time as are my items for sale on Amazon. I get alerts daily showing things similar to what you posted.

The best line of defense is to have a user name here that suits you but also is generic enough to not pull up your specific posts on search. For instance had you been just Lilly or Coyote then you would be fairly anonymous.

@Dog I said it kind of bugged me, it’s not the end of the world, I can manage deal. Perhaps, if I had just been Lilly or Coyote I would be fairly anonymous, yes and if I had been 5’ 11”, gorgeous, with legs that go on and on, brilliant and charming, in addition to my other numerous fine qualities, I would have set the world on fire but that ship never got built and the other one has already sailed, so?

And you do realize that lillycoyote is not my real name, right, so it doesn’t really matter, does it? :-)

Thanks, anyway. Love ya, dog.

LillyCoyote is not your name?~ I am crushed… (but you have to admit it would make a kick ass name.)

It bugs me that they steal the content. A lot actually. Not only is it cheezy but it dilutes the content for the original providers. There was a site doing it trying to look like a genuine Q & A site once. I think Ben had to send them a cease and desist order. That was just plain crooked.

Open up a different e-mail address just for Fluther, and don’t share it with anyone. The way your daughter was able to link to you was through the Yahoo address.

@Dog Thank you, I think it’s a pretty kick ass name myself….. to be continued in a secret message, canis to canis, to be delivered by carrier pigeon.
