What is the purpose of a wood stud mounting for a TV bracket?

Asked by higherground (1148points) February 12th, 2011

I have bought a TV bracket to mount my television to the wall. However, the instruction manual says that we require two wood stud mounted to the mounting plate.

Is there a purpose for this and is it necessary?

I would imagine its for the security of your screen. Plastic would not be strong enough, so wood it is. Also, you may have to install the mounting directly into the wood studs in your walls. It all depends on the weight of your screen.

It’s necessary because mere plaster or drywall by itself may not be sufficient for support.

You’d hate to see the result if the entire thing came toppling down one fine day.

A stud is a solid piece of wood and can support a lot of weight. Most walls can handle pictures or posters and a few accent shelves for bric-a-brac, but anything heavier should be anchored by studs.

it isn’t hard to find a stud behind a wall. Hopefully you might be able to borrow a stud sensor to do this. Or you can sound for one by thumping the wall going horizontally many times till you hear and feel a solid spot. Usually they will be 16” apart so if you do locate one its a good bet the next one is 16” either side of it. Also there should always be a stud next to an electrical outlet on one side or another which is a good place to start measuring from. They are only 1½” wide unless you get lucky and land on a double stud but usually they will be the edge of a window or door opening, possibly in corners too.
