Do you think "Watson" will win Jeopardy?

Asked by coffeenut (6171points) February 14th, 2011

Story

I think the next few nights will be very interesting seeing what “Watson” is capable of….. Last month they had a test run and it did very well…..But I’m sure there have been tweaks in the program since then….

Will IBM be able to pull it off again it’s only been 14 years since “Deep Blue” and have another computer beat the best…..at our own game? Lol

Since during the practice, it beat Jeopardy champ Ken Jennings, I would say it will win here.

Unless Jennings purposely went easy during practice. He is a sneaky shit.

There’s a huge difference between a chess game and jeopardy. As a chess game progresses, the potential choices that either side can make become more and more limited – and therefore predictable.

Jeopardy doesn’t have that – no individual response limits future responses. I’ll be very impressed if this publicly results in a win.

It will signal some interesting advances in computers.

I think Watson Will win but if not this time it will win next time.

I’m very interested in this especially since my son works for IBM. The program was taped at his base but no-one who was not involved with the project was allowed in the building that day. The programming problem is all of the idiomatic language, puns and contextual issues of the questions. On NPR this morning, they said that when Watson was asked what grasshoppers eat, he said “kosher!” Still my money is on Big Blue.

I spoke to him yesterday; his attitude is hopeful but guarded. He’s just not a “pun person.”

I heard a rumour that Watson has the flu and it may be called off.

Ken – Watson – Brad

200 – 5700 – 1000
———————————1st round
2000 – 5000 – 5000
———————————2nd round

Watson Dominated the first round But got thrown off on the second round…

Once in the second round Ken buzzed in and gave a incorrect answer so Watson buzzed in….and gave the same wrong answer….odd I wonder if Watson gets the other players answers

But all in all I think it did do very well the first day….can’t wait for tomorrow.

I am finding it very exciting. I think the background material is done well too.

I haven’t read much on this – is there some sort of delay on the computer so that it buzzes in with normal human response time?

coffeenut's avatar

@iamthemob I’m not sure what you mean…Watson has a real buzzer that has to be pushed with it’s….“thumb” and can only buzz in/answer after the question is read to the others…..Than it’s whoever/whatever is fastest Watson isn’t always first
