Does anyone have a method to find a Psychiatrist who works with autistic people in Staten Island, New York?

Asked by philosopher (9065points) February 16th, 2011

My son’s Doctor is difficult to reach and not knowledgeable.
I recently spoke with a Psychiatrist in Iowa and I want someone like him. He is currently prescribing Namemda and seeing great results.
It is heartbreaking that I can’t find anyone like him here.
I have insurance.

Have you tried going to a local support group for parents of autistic children.

This is how my Sister found the wonderful pediatrician for my niece with Down Syndrome.

He is fantastic and has a great way with the kids. And since these kids make up a significant portion of his practice, he is much more knowledgeable than the average Doc.

Other parents are one of your best resources. Nothing like a personalized reco.

@Buttonstc
Thank God we have Doctor. A pediatrician.
The support group recommend his current worthless Psychiatrist.

Well, I guess all rules of thumb have their exceptions, unfortunately.

But you are fortunate to live in the NY metro area. Are there any other support groups around ? Perhaps in Manhattan or even Westchester?

What quality are you looking for in a Psych. to treat his Autism. Better insight, more empathy? Or perhaps more in touch with cutting edge treatment methods.

I used to teach in Bklyn. years ago and we were never lacking for an abundance of professionals in every aspect of children needs.

My general impression of SI has always been that they tend to be a bit insular or parochial. I realize it’s a bit of a generalization, but perhaps you would do well to cast a wider net.

I’ll do a little pondering and hunting around and get back to you if I think of anything else.

You really are fortunate to be with access to the abundant resources of a large Metro area rather than out in the middle of W. Gibbip somewhere :)

Are you aware of the planned opening in 2012 of the Institute for Brain Development affiliated with NY Presbyterian Medical Center, Columbia University ?

This is for the treatment and research of Autism Spectrum Disprders in children and adults.

If I lived in the area and had a child with ASD, that would be at the top of the list of places Id be calling for a physicisn referral. I would specifically be looking to get an immediate appt. with any of the Drs. scheduled to be a part of that program.

I’m assuming that a program affiliated with one of the premier medical institutions in the NY area with a national reputation would already have attracted some top talent as part of their team.

Even tho it’s not open yet, I’m sure they have a list of the highest caliber specialists in the area who presumably see patients in their private practices.

So next year when it opens, I’m pretty sure they’ll likely be doing clinical trials with some cutting-edge treatment modalities.

If you’re son is already a patient with one of their Drs. it puts him a step ahead, hopefully.

Anyhow, it’s worth a call.

Just put Autism into the search bar at top right to get more info and (presumably) their phone no.

There are a few articles describing the upcoming center opening.
